There are some people who have absolutely no business buying cars at the "bargain" end of the market, and yet such people are only found at the bargain end of the market. You seem to have just met two of them. If they had the slightest sense they'd have checked the car properly. If they had any sense of how to conduct themselves, they'd accept that this is a mistake they made and resolve it themselves, presumably by selling the car.

How scummy did they come across as?

I'm with tumble dryer on this. Here's an offer, OP give them their money back, prove the sale and evidence it and I'll come down to your house, give you £400 and take the car away. You just have to prove your story and your daughter will get a 33% hike in her money for the car.
Organise this properly, so the instant you give them the money back, Gavia walks up, gives you £400 for it, and thanks them for providing an opportunity to bag a bargain by being fkitted timewasting charlatans. Even better, lend Gavia a chunk extra so he actually hands you something like a grand.

£300 is £300. It can be a lot, or nothing. Or somewhere in between.

My thoughts are that I'd equate £300 on one side of the scales to 'grief' on the other side. Give him a full refund. Give your daughter 200 real pounds out of your pocket (hey Dad, c'mon) and take Pug to local scrappy. With 5 months legit MOT left you'll get £200 all day long. Dad and daughter get a meal on the 'profit' and a laugh at the aholes still wandering the countryside in search of their special spec Maybach.

Life's too short. (Amend figures to suit your own personal circumstances. Don't use mine ffs!) smile
Since you're suggesting handing out someone else's money, can I have some?

Call him out on this, please.
He's welcome to, I wouldn't have offered otherwise.

He'll (or his daughter) be quids in , if he / she can prove the story.

If you want the car for £400 be my guest, I'm sure the buyer would be happy as a pig in s**t to get their money back.
Yes I've been a member of Piston Heads for quite some time but as noted I haven't really posted much of anything. I have listed a couple of Corvettes for sale as well as a couple of Karmann Ghias.

It's all good. Anyone that may have ever seen one of my own personal for sale ads would know I do my best to describe a car to the best of my ability with links to tens of pictures and videos.

The listing for this car was made by my daughter and was completely truthful but lacking in detail.

£300 is £300 and it's now residing happily in my daughters bank account.

Having said that it could be a good excuse for someone to come to sunny Cornwall for the bank holiday weekend! Gavia, come on down!

More than happy to come down and do the deal. I'll need some evidence first though. Send me a copy of the advert and the registration number and I'll do a bit of due diligence at my end. I might ask for another few bits just to satisfy my curiosity, but I'm good for the money and a few emails will have this sorted by the end of next week without a problem. Send it via PM if you'd prefer.

The dad has no balls or he'd have test driven and would have driven it away there and then. Tell him it's his car now. For £300 they should be happy it moves.

Go for it Gavia. As someone who is currently going through a lot of pain trying to find a cheap runabout, anything that actually has a working clutch and oil on the dipstick would be great.

I would certainly not be giving them a refund - explain that they have bought it and that the v5 is on its way to them and that's that. Why roll over and give them £300?

If he proves it, then you can have it for £200, as I'll only scrap it anyway.

So Gavia is effectively paying £200 to make an internet point. Or rather, to be found out attempting to make an internet point.

Genius.

Car ads are about to get very lengthy if we now have to list all features NOT on the car

You're right, assuming I get found out.

Something went wrong with my last post.
Kudos to you Gavia. I'm still not sure why I got called out or caught your attention but I'm happy to provide any information you want or need.
I'd be happy give them their money back and for you to come and collect. I'd even let you have it for the £325 it was originally listed for Or you can step up with the £400 and I'll give £300 to my daughter and donate the £100 to cancer research.
The ad was placed in a closed group on Facebook so I'll post a screen shot. I also have the messenger conversation between myself and the buyer which I can send you.
Car registration is Y767DFX as per the advert.
Let me know if you want any other info.

I've got an even better idea. As Gavia is so keen to splash out £400, get him to give your buyer his £300 back directly and the extra £100 to you.

I thought that call out was a bit premature myself. Seems I was right.

I understand the scepticism about some of the things that are said on PH, but not quite sure why Gavia couldn't believe this one. Isn't uncommon to get idiots with high expectations buying £300 cars and trying to come back with faults.

Just tell the buyers that unfortunately your daughter has put that £300 towards a deposit on a new car.
I'm not sure why you even need power steering on a car that weighs less than a ton, if they put their hands up and admitted they made a mistake then I'd give them a bit more leeway but at the end of the day you've wasted a day dealing with them and now have all the hassle of taking the car back so for £300 I'd just reply no and then ignore any further correspondence.
Edit: if they try and bring up the oil angle then show they your driveway and the fact that no oil has leaked in the time you've had it (I'm assuming it isn't leaking oil).
Perhaps spend £2 on a new dipstick to placate them as well http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/362024348330
