Transferring registration plates

I have an older car with a registration plate I would like to put on a different car.

Transferring the plate over seems quite simple but after transferring the plate can I request a new age related registration for the older car that no longer has a registration?

The inner workings of the DVLA are mysterious so any help appreciated.

they will give you an age related (non transferable) plate if older than 1963 possibly an A suffix

The new plate they give you will be non transferable.

If you retain the current plate using the online system it will immediately issue you the new one and tell you what it will be there and then.
