This is ringing bells for what my friend did. I don't recall his insurance being that bad at the time, but then this is ~15 years ago...
Many moons ago, I was in a similar position. I got caught doing 79 in a 40 on a DC... I thought "oh it's OK I'll talk my way out of it somehow" when the copper pulled me over. Once I was sat in the car and he produced the speed gun my heart sank and I knew there was no getting out of this. I couldn't afford a fancy solicitor.

Went to court because of the speed and they actually told me I was getting 6 points but I piped up with "I do have a letter here from my employer regarding needing my license" and for some reason they read it and then offered me a choice between taking 6 points which would put me back on a provisional or taking a 14 day ban.

I took the ban, but it had a knock on effect on my insurance premiums until it disappeared from my license. In hindsight I might have been better taking the six points...

Wrong. Points will still be there, and if he accrues a total of 12 or more points within a 3 year period then he's liable for a 'totting up' disqualification of at least 6 months.

The 'reset' thing is completely wrong as revocation pursuant to the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995 happens only once.
Thanks Agt I stand corrected!
