"Resources?" There's no some MI6-esque headquarters with a guy in a darknered room with LED strips along the floor like a plane, typing on 6 laptops each with 3 screens at once. You can do a simple IP/whois lookup yourself. It will have taken the police seconds to do.

It is a waste of resources - any resources - to deal with a "someone said nasty things" playground situation.

It wasn't a beat bobby who popped in to run whois query. And you, usually, can't then trivially lookup a residence address from an IP.

Yup usually just points you to the provider. Even the area given is often very wrong, so they'd have had to go to the provider, who would then trace it to the router and then through billing for the address

A very valid point well made. I know she was described as 'middle aged', but as we're in the era of the MILF and Yummy Mummies, middle aged these days carries a much lesser risk

I'm sure had you been sent a video of a family member like this, you'd want the police to follow it up. This is a more beneficial use of time the numerous people that have been arrested for name calling on Twitter. It sounds like the OP is dodging questions about the exact message and it could probably be interpreted as intentionally nasty. Note I said MORE beneficial. I still think it's a pretty big waste of time, it wasn't a privately recorded video.

You absolutely can. Any form of connection, even something like Xbox voice chat you can get an IP from a packet sniffer allowing you to look up somebodies home address yourself. Only real way to avoid it is a proxy service.

I wanted the police to find whoever burgled my garage, which is an actual crime and something the police exist to deal with. Perhaps if they weren't being expected to look into people sending emails about how well each other's relatives can take a cock, there'd have been more resources available for them to do so, who knows?

Likewise - I can't drag a response out of those who were supposed to be dealing with mine over 2 months ago. I'm surprised it's got this far but I still suspect the OP is keeping details hidden, either that son isn't actually that great mates with said brother or the words of the email haven't been disclosed in full.

To add, I don't blame them - they have poor resources to draw on, and there are more serious problems than mine to be dealt with. I'm insured, I got replacements for most of my stolen stuff, and I've got a new door and security setup.

My issue is with people draining the police's resources further still by demanding they deal with inconsequential bks like this, and acting as care workers to paper over the cracks in other services.

A couple of chaps at my old workplace had very minor fisticuffs after a Xmas bash.

Police were falling over themselves to solve the heinous crime! CCTV was inspected, staff were interviewed... all to the bewilderment of onlookers.

Is this all a natural effect of "Modern Coppers". I think the profession now attracts a certain group of people who want to "make a difference".

You could take the entire police force and dedicate them solely to fraud and not every matter would be investigated.

Fraud literally doubles crime figures which is why Action Fraud were created who have huge delays due to the volume they receive.

I'm not sure whether or not this specific matter could be binned earlier or not.

The prison population offence categories don't really change over time as well as what ends up in court.

Taking a couple of examples from the hundreds of thousands of annual investigations and trying to extrapolate and draw conclusions is pretty foolish.

Most police officers whom I have had much to do with are dedicated public servants who care about reducing crime and making life better for non criminals, but it is easy for glib tabloid readers to depict all coppers as lazy, venal, stupid, pro-criminal, politically correct, etc. The same applies for most Judges, prison governors and so on.
