I'd think that you exactly don't earth the van. That's how it works, the perp earths the van and gets a jolt.

You'd need to have the van earthed somehow for that to work, so someone could easily just remove the earthing spike.

The perp completes the circuit where the van's the +ve and the ground is the -ve, so you have to have the device connected to both the van and the ground. Trust me on this, I'm a farmers son, I've have way too many shocks from electric fence units biggrin

Where is the yard located?

Would anti theft paint smeared on the underside of the van work?

Dig a pit, line it, fill it with water + anti freeze park vans in it.

Both cheap the last one is stupid!!

Thanks for all the ideas folks.

I've decided to start with to go down the sleepers under the van route, ordered those today, plus bollards to go behind the vans, hopefully stopping them just cutting handbrake cable and pushing van back off the sleepers, also having 3 large lamps fitted that will cover the whole yd.

I'm sure if they want them, they will somehow get them, but hopefully these deterrents will make them think twice.

Get security on the cats.

Guard dog for the yard? Or since there is a fence outside what is the law on an electric fence for the inside?

Park over a 10ft pit with spring loaded doors on it, then piss on the dirty scum bags the next day.

There's a saying in the security industry: a fence only keeps out those who don't really want to get in. In other words, passive protection only deters the amateurs, which would probably cover the two you scared off.
In the same way that locks only keep honest people out...
Er, honest people probably wouldn't want to get in...

Deep pit with a flimsy cover. Slide under van, cover breaks and they fall in.

Spikes in the bottom optional wink

I'd imagine your homemade anti freeze pond will be even more of a deterrent when it's filled with the corpses of every stray cat within a 5 mile radius...

Hate to upset you but they also smash the indicator light which allows them to open the bonnet catch and nick them from under the bonnet

If you could build a slight recess you could sit the vans in 3/4 inches of water, park with wellies but no one is going to want to lie down in water to get the cats off!

Sleepers also sound good..

Add a few piranha's (or sharks with frikin' laser beams on their heads) just in case...

What's the betting they'll nick the sleepers, as they're worth money. I sympathise, what a horrible situation. How about a variation on the 'cat hose', so that if the perps get near the vans they get a shot of paint over them. Could be a problem with felines though. Underfed dogs has to be the favourite.
Is it possible to put up barbed wire? If it's allowed could you angle it so they can get in, but not out.

Is there something either in existence or that can be fabricated that would provide a “quick release” mechanism for the cats? They can’t steal what isn’t there.

Or perhaps create a professional looking sign with made up company logo that alludes to the fact that such a device has been deployed and any searching for cats will be futile.

Probably not to be gas tight and easy to do, also they'll just break into the sheds until they find where the cats have been put - save them the bother of removing them!
