375 fatalities on the Autobahn at a rate of 1.6 per billion vehicle km.
89 fatalities on Motorways at a rate of 0.8 per billion vehicle km.
Roughly double on the Autobahns.
DE data from wikipedia.
UK data from: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa... and https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...
So doubling the speed limit doubles the risk of fatalities? Whodathunkit...........89 fatalities on Motorways at a rate of 0.8 per billion vehicle km.

For example, what's the culture in terms of wearing seatbelts compared to the UK and what's the relative availability of things like air ambulances to get people to hospital quickly? I've no idea on the answer to either but unless everything else is on pretty much a like for like basis it's surely difficult to form a conclusion on the extent to which different speed limits are affecting the level of fatalities?
And in the UK, only around 15% of accidents involve excess speeds, that would translate to around 25 more deaths per annum in Germany on the autobahn compared to the UK due to speed.

In my experience, seatbelt and air ambulance: pretty similar.Mobile phone use, smoking, general tttishness: likewise.
They are very good at making a 'Rettungsgasse', i.e. getting out of the way so first responders can go up between the lanes.

Not if they leave earlier...duh! People rushing around at 70 mph are irresponsible tts.
70 mph on a motorway is such an irresponsible speed. It kills trees, children (not sure what they're doing on the motorway) and little bunnies. It's too fast, you couldn't possibly avoid crashing...captainaverage said:

You could also slip in the shower, hit your head and die. Which is more likely than being a fatality on a UK motorway. Both Germany and UK have extremely low road accident rates in any way you measure them. As does most of Western Europe.
Doing 136 is stupid because its illegal and likely to result in an inconvenient penalty (financial or custodial), but I just don't buy the road safety argument in either of these countries.

We must do something about these showers. So dangerous, just think of all the lives we can save. I'd say we should ban showers. Both Germany and UK have extremely low road accident rates in any way you measure them. As does most of Western Europe.

In fairness it is esy to find yourself nudging over the limit when the motorway is empty.
Hopefully said with tongue firmly in cheek.I've had plenty of cars that would go from 70 to 140+ in only a few seconds.
I regularly like to 'open the taps' on the motorway, but generally not when there are any unidentifiable cars behind me.

what u reckon 186mph on empty motorway would get you ?
Rather depends when & where (then after that if it's offence then & there you have to consider previous etc).Lord Marylebone said:

Last time I looked, performance and non performance cars have the same windows (and physics). A 50% uplift in speed from 90mph to 136mph feels massively different in pretty anything.
What? Pretty sure a performance car has better aerodynamics, brakes, stability, stopping power, wider tyres, etc.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
