RE: Scamera partnership not lying: ASA
Discussion
..."The ASA reckoned that readers would understand the claim "speeding is the largest contributory factor in road collisions and casualties" to mean that inappropriate or excessive speed was the largest contributory factor in road collisions and casualties, and not breaking the speed limit only...."
Yeah,of course they do

It is not surprising, no one can get jobs in quangos like these unless they fully support the labour party. The ASA has banned so many car adverts which they felt glorified speed, or encouraged drivers to go faster, even where there has been only the odd complaint. They denied a complaint about the accident advert where the kiddie is knocked over by a car. The advert is so blatently wrong as the car brakes are locked up, the shocks are knackered etc etc, but they iirc said the intention was good on that one. So is it little wonder that inspite of clearly misselling on this leaflet in question they ignore the facts and go with the spin.
It make me so sad we have got here so quickly.
It make me so sad we have got here so quickly.
It might be a tadge simplistic (thats me all over though ) but surely if the cameras are there to prevent accidents and not generate revenue the government would drop the 60 quid fine and just impose points penalties?
Yeah right!
There's only one word to describe these people.. it's the only swear word left that offends the ladies.
pffft!
I'm going to vote for the raving loonies.. everyone else seems to have joined without realising.

This is just sick. Of course speed is a factor, everyone is traveling, therefore they have speed. What they fail to uphold, is that it has anything to do with traveling in excess of the speed limit. And they are basicaly saying that just because the money making partnerships dont specify they this, and lie to the public about it, the public can see over this.
What next? Traveling West is a contributry factor in 25% of accidents? So should we stop people traveling in a Westerly direction?

I would like to ask ASA and the DSCP, if a motorist driving too close to another car was fined by the police, would they fine him for speeding or un due care and attention? The latter i think which means driving too close is NOT a speeding offence and proves A.S.A. and the DSCP are interpreting the figures wrong to justify scameras yet again.

This decision by the ASA tends to suggest that nobody on their panel drives a great deal. They will have similar views to the great unwashed British public who drive 2 miles each way to work each day and to the shops at weekend and are taken in by the so-called experts' view of speed limits and driving.
The same goes for ministers. What do they know about driving? They get chauffered around everywhere.
Speed camera partnerships - they look at statistics and pick out the ones to justify their existance (and then get arsy when you ask them for any other stats that may weaken their position). I don't get the impression that Steve Callaghan, for instance is a driving enthusiast, likes driving or even that experienced a driver.

When will this obsession with speed end?
It is a blatant cash register scheme to punish speeding this way and be seen to be improving road safety..
The quality of British driving as a whole gets worse every year.. More Insurance dodgers and Numberplate cloning on top of that. And drink driving isnt decreasing.. Oh and drug driving is going up.
But hey, lets not spend money having police officers on the roads and stopping people driving badly generally.. ohh no.
Lets bung up lots of high tech devices which can get drivers going over speed limits, make the government look like they're tackling road safety, and they can make money out of the convictions and maybe even reduce the number of cars on the road by motorists with over 12 points on their license..
Government & police work 0 Cash Generated.. ££££££
Im sorry to say if they genuinely cared about peoples lives more than generating cash, they would stop this obsession with speeding convictions and have a decent number of officers (not with conviction targets) on the roads doing what our taxes pay them to do..
Help to Keep our Roads safe!!!!
you missd a mention on the TRL and their fudge reports to favour more cameras.
We will never win this debate until we have media and political leaders from a broadly right wing background running the show.
You see, the whole notion of slowing things down is anathema to progress itself.
Since the industrial revolution, transport has been about garnering more speed. Speed in all it's forms: speed sustains life, it enhances life. Speed for the sake of it, speed for pertinent commercial, perhaps grocerial benefit. Speed, for want of a better expression, is good.
In the same way that the superb, lady commentator on the panel of last week's QT challenged the very tenets of public versus private expenditure ~ via taxation istelf (asking what on earth gives government some kind of mindlessly accepted, moral right to know what's best for us?) ~ so we need to reject the 'accepted wisdom' that this propogandist drivel represents.
After all, is it not the case that most homo sapiens simply like cars - and the faster the better? It's perfectly natural and the tendancy to deny it by more and more persecutory legislation is the stuff of purest, societal control.
How and why, then ,do we put up with it? Simple: because the left wing media has created a scared issue, garnered by the tragic deaths of yes, many people but the sledgehammer being used to crack the nut is all so woefully excessive.
By 2009 your TVR will be simply illegal.

We can properly punish the scumbags who, with their car theft and crazy antics on the public highways, have over the past 10 or 15 years led to all these road humps, etc, in urban areas, and ridiculous insurance premiums.
These sub-humans are also responsible for many high speed accidents where pedestrian fatalities have ocurred.
It should be made clear to them that their spell in JAIL
will be in the sex-offenders section. They can then practice their speedy manoeuvres to their hearts content, in avoiding the attentions of large hairy men.
Too many people do tailgate on our roads, and it is one of my pet hates. We can't excuse all bad behaviour, and I don't mind cameras catching those people out.
To my mind, the absolute forestation of our roads with signs of all sizes and shapes competing for our already hard-pressed attention, along with the billions of gallons of painted lines and squiggles covering every bit of the surface at junctions, etc, is the latest scourge of motoring.
For god's sake will someone give these guys with paint pots and sign boards something else to do !!!

grahambell said:Mybe, but the Chief Constable who first deployed them himself has had a change of heart and now thinks they are misused. They may have been implemented under a previous Tory government, but the potential new one has pledged to cut down on them, and to stop the persecution of the motorist. Which is more than can be said of other parties.
