To everyone saying 'just cancel your credit card' - you can't, and it wouldn't make any difference. You can contact your credit card company and tell them you are in dispute over the charges though, they'll either refund it temporarily until the dispute is resolved, or put some sort of marker on your account.
I had to do the same thing when Sixt tried to sting me for nigh on £2000 for a clutch, starter motor and dual mass flywheel for a Grand Scenic that I'd done about 300 miles in - never heard anything more, but I'm probably black-listed with Sixt for the rest of time.

WD40 could be used to hide the scratch when hiring it out. Maybe. Not saying they would but...

Makes no difference, Gold car has ripped off punters for decades, just being bought out by Eurocar, as long as they make profits no one gives a st.

I had a black ford people carrier for a 24hr hire, it made one journey of about 30miles, and when it was being picked up the guy went straight to the underside of the front bumper and pointed out a scratch through the paint to the back plastic within 10secs of arriving and stung my employer for the damage. I have no doubt whatsoever that it was a stitch up but what can you do.

This lot are dirt cheap and if you don’t take the extra insurance they tak you to the cleaners.

I saw a media report on them with the same report. They had a mini was unloved check out of the tyre and when you return they try and fleece you for damages for even the smallest mark.

The only way the guy went to the mark it’s that dirt is he knew it as there.

These guys are well known for it!

To be fair, the "media report" was channel 4's Supershoppers, which was shown at the start of the week and reported further up this thread.

...and although the body shop expert they showed on the programme found other damage not noted on the rental contract, they weren't actually charged, not did they attempt to charge for anything else. It was not the finest journalism.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve emailed the customer services etc and have been told they are happy that the damage was not on the car when I collected it so next stage is to send the letters and photographs to the MD and take it from there.

As others have said, annual euro car hire insurance is less than £40 and covers everything, including the excess they might hold onto. This is almost always cheaper than adding on the insurance from the hire company, even for a week.

Some of the cheap companies hate it when you explain you are insured, some just shrug. Gold car at Pisa was the worst car hire experience I've ever had. Had to literally argue with them to accept my insurance, then when I returned they tried to tell me the fuel was 1mm from full, and then put me at the back of a very very long queue to simply hand the keys back to someone that was doing nothing but reading phone texts.

Hang in there and stand you ground.

The car tyre was damaged though and was not in a drivable condition.

Unfair in what way? Are you saying it was there before? I assume the car was clean when you collected it?

I assume you chose not to insure yourself for damage caused that wasn't your fault?
Knowing exactly where the damage was located to be able to remove the dirt only in that area, pretty much proves foreknowledge.

Gold Car anywhere. Truly dreadful and obnoxious with it.

Is that even a proper scratch? Looks like it will polish out. I would want to see what it looks like after a polish before there is any mention of cost. Then consider whether any remaining mark is still chargeable and not fair wear and tear. Then consider whether the shoe caused it (although proving he used his shoe may be tricky). Then look for satisfaction as to how he knew the scratch was underneath the dirt in the first place. Then ask why it was necessary to remove the dirt-it should have been visible and clearly evident before it was ‘cleaned’. Did it get pointed out before he wiped the panel? Then argue that the cost is unreasonable.

The owners tell me they don't make a penny on the actual hire itself, they make the money on damaged wheels, bodywork, baby seat and sat nav hire.
I'd suggest they haven't got their business model quite dialled in if that's true what they're telling you. Recharge and add one are profitable, but not sustainable.

Most margin in rental is made from the resale of vehicles. There are enough ways to buy them with fleet discounts, rent for 6 -12 months then dispose of them, rinse and repeat.
This ^^^^. I was told this by an Enterprise agent a couple of years ago. They don’t make money on the rental as such.
