So, in summary then;

OP's wife got stopped on the M56.

OP's wife may or may not have had a bit of a kerfuffle with the officer.

FPN issued - number plate fails to conform (reason/ reasons not stated).

Number plate may or may not conform. OP may have dodgy vernier gauge.

CPS may or may not run it if N/G plea.

OP may or may not call down to the police station to prove his wifes innocence.

Porsche Cayennes have much hate directed at them.

No one likes crap cherished transfers.

No one likes illegally spaced plates.

Some people think the police are being petty.

Standard PH thread - it just needs;.

Is the Cayenne leased or bought outright ? Outright
How much did you pay for the cherished transfer ? dunno, it's about £80 to transfer the mark vehicle to vehicle, the mark has been in my family for years
Do you think you're better than everyone else 'cos you've got a Porsche and a private plate ? Nope, definitely not
Do you think the police are trustworthy/ corrupt/ useless/ just after motorists ? No comment!
Would you dominate the stairs if a gang of nutters came for your Porsche at 02.00 hours ? Nope, take it, but you're not taking the others wink

The vernier caliper the OP used states an accuracy plus or minus 0.02mm but an operating range of 5 degrees celcius to 40 degrees celcius. Was it over 5oC when you measured OP? At this time of year and at night I'd doubt it. Did you definitely measure correctly? Maybe try again during the day when it's well over 5oC tomorrow (touch wood).
fk me, it's kinda sad we're into the territory of precision measurement for a plate that is for all intents and purposes, legal. But it seems a copper has got a cob on for someone evidently more wealthy than he, so............

The ID measurement jaws on cheap verniers are often neither ground straight nor zeroed and are thus fking useless. Use the outside jaws, or falling that i'll bring my gauge blocks and Mitutoyo gear around PM me for my day rates, i'm gonna need the cash as i've just measured my plates and the letter spacing is 2 thou under all round! I'll be putting a new plate out to tender on Monday for plates with +/- 0.00 tolerances, i'm expecting a bill of several thousand laugh

If the OP had just used a wooden ruler to measure the plate, would we still be having the debate about legal/illegal ?

Exactly!

And for those slagging off the OP for his "elitist vanity plate" can I remind you of his post on PAGE 1,
"......... it was passed to me just before my dad passed away, on the condition that I kept it whilst he was alive, held a lot of sentimental value to him and myself and he died in an accident before it went on my car......."

So out of all the links and measurements that have been put on this thread, the question I would like to ask is, do number plates not have to be of standard length ??
My son was fined for a shortened plate on his TT at the rear, also had to take it to an mot station to get approval that a standard plate had been fitted.
No: a common misconception. If you can find any such stipulation in the 2001 regs I will donate £10 to charity.
Are you sure there wasn't some other additional reason for your son's conviction?
It is quite common for people to simultaneously mess around with character size/spacing/borders/font.

I can quite legally fit plates with reduced size characters/spacing/borders to two of my cars.
Something an uninformed police officer was completely unaware of when he tugged me around 10 years ago.

I'm sure, once when I ordered online, the regs stated that whatever number of characters, the plate needed to be a set length (sure, looked odd with just a few characters and all the blank space). It seems this is no longer the case, which is good.

Why does it have to "mean" anything? It's just a string of random letters and numbers...

(I didn't think anything would make that Cayenne look tasteful, but...)

The regs haven't changed since 2001. They got a lot stronger then, compared to previously.

Thinking of it, think the letters may of been smaller too, he got the car like it so I did not really twig.

re your £10, I did read it and I could not see the there was a set length stated, that why I asked the question, a tenner saved lol.

I meant Hatson's plate above, not OP's plate. OPs's is most likely initials but I was thinking Hatson's means sonething else to him?

Is it just me who thinks these 'cut down' plates on cars look absolutely naff? I have nothing against personalised plates, having one myself, but the OP's one would look far classier if it were just on a normal-sized plate that fits the boot lid space properly.
