This is what all of the papers seem to be quoting, the article in the derby telegraph
https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/derby-news/m...
This was also on their website:

I wonder why these guys punishments were so high.

"Nicholas Lighton, 45, of Danesby Rise, Denby, was fined £130 and was ordered to pay £85 costs, a £30 victim surcharge and was disqualified from driving for six months for speeding at 36mph in a 30mph limit in Derby Road, Marehay, on February 20."

"Aidan Langham, 23, of Derwent Avenue, Ilkeston, was fined £173 and was ordered to pay £85 costs, a £30 victim surcharge and had his licence endorsed with three penalty points for speeding at 36mph in a 30mph limit in Peasehill Road, Ripley, on April 19."

Compared with:

"Sarah Nwadike, 37, of Prestwick Way, Derby, was fined £66 and was ordered to pay £85 costs, a £30 victim surcharge and had her licence endorsed with three penalty points for speeding at 36mph in a 30mph limit in Osmaston Road, Derby, on April 21."

Totting up ban probably.

None of these newspaper stories are claiming the cameras are set to get you at any speed above the current limit. They just say they are live at all times, which is basically correct in most cases.

What's the matter with people these days? Can't they read or are they just immensely thick?

That makes sense. I edited my post to add some more. Perhaps those caught at 36 were not eligible for a SAC.

Two of us each do 50 to 80,000 miles a year and our experience indicates that a camera will be picked at random and turned live for one to two weeks only. You can see them flasing light Christmas trees on the opposite carriageway.

Mainly spotted up the M1 in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, where Derbys police recently put out a fib of a press release that they're live all the ime.

When I actually see someone getting done for speeding on a fast road at within 25% above the limit I'll start panicking. Yet more scaremongering

I do a fair bit of motorway driving. Through the SMART sections on the M1/M25/M6/M40 I've always set my CC to 80mph if it's showing NSL or blank, and never been done. Similar for the lower limits. 42/40 54/50, 65/60 etc.

As someone said previously - sort the middle lane gimps out and they'd be amazed at the ease on congestion and, more thank likely, accident rates as a result!

Everyone will hate me for this but, I've simply given up. Sold my Alfa 156 2,5, got rid of the Lancia Thema turbo (OK, I scrapped that one but could have restored it) and instead of the S40 T5 I wanted I'm getting a Suzuki Swift Sport. I just can't justify having a 140mph car anymore.
At least I have the memories.
Even in France where I once did 125 miles in one hour (on a near deserted route nationale, coming back from Le Mans) things are no better. On an unlimited Autobahn in the Lancia whilst doing an (indicated) 145mph getting flashed by a Lamborghini to let him by...

Same here, I go throught the VSL section of the M20 everyday, and the smart section on the bottom of the M25 a couple of times a week, cruise set to 80, so I guess I'm actually doing 76-77 and I've never had a problem. Though I will be checking the post with a slight thrill for a while now I've said this.

In the day and age of an overly congested road system, it isn't going to get any better LOL

FFS, don't be so negative. There are fun places if you think and look for them.

Fun I agree but not the "lets boot it and see what it'll do" anymore.
But I do have to say that a car's top speed is of little interest to me anymore.
On the day after Boxing day I drove back from London to Devon and honestly never got over 45mph all the way, and mostly around 25-30, Just sheer volume of traffic on M4 and M5 all the way. Took over 6 hours!

Well that is one of the busiest days of the year for traffic with everyone going home after christmas with their families. I'm sure most other days if you went a different time you'd have got it above the speed limit, certainly would have on a Christmas day drive.

So your true speed is probably somewhere between 73 and 78, no problem there!

I drove down the M25 yesterday and the speed limit was set to 50. The camera just past clacket lane services was going absolutely mental. I was doing 50 so shouldn’t have got flashed but it went off. I watched it in my mirrors and it was going off like a Christmas tree as people went under it. Never actually seen them do anything before.
