Last Sunday morning at 1.30am a (I think) pi55ed-up kid in a Renault Clio steamed through our village at god knows what speed, lost it just before the slight bend outside our house and rammed the church stone wall opposite our house ...

On any other Sat night/Sun morning he may have got clean away but we had my 14yo son and seven mates camping out in the garden as part of his birthday weekend. I was sound asleep, they were all up and still dressed, chatting away etc.

On hearing the smash, all the kids run out the back gate to see this bloke, dazed, trying to start the car. He then asks for help in getting it off the road, the kids help him push it a bit but he then legs it with the rear offside still sticking out 2/3ft into the road. Lights out etc. This is on a bend remember.

I ring the law - 20 mins later they turn up, two big Volvos – three cops.

Having noted the no. plate and had the address confirmed they ask us where a particular road is (it's five minutes walk) ...

So then instead of (IMO) one of them making the road safe, trying to shift the Clio, getting the cones out etc, all three (and the Volvos) disappear round to the guy's house.

I have to get my big flashlight thingy out of the garage and tehnspend the next half an hour with some of the kids, warning people speeding along our road to slow down as they may just clout this Clio etc ...

Were the law right to bomb off for the 'glory' or should one of them have accepted the need to make the situation safe?

I'll also mention that when two of them returned after the 30 mins (in one car), neither came over to say, thanks mate, go to bed now. I appraoched them and said "can I go in now - I'm bleedin' freezin'!"

No thanks, nothing. No wonder people don't want to help anymore.

Apparently, the car was his as the keys were in it ...

But I presume he legged it home and hid in the loft or summat ... !

Must be charged with dangerous driving though surely.

Worst thing is? Some of the kids who were here thought they know who he is ...

2 cars surley they could have done both?

1 car stay and warn motorists with warning triangles one car go and see the guy?

no doubt he will say he was shook up so had a little drink when he got in and no prosecution will take place anyway.

Dunno about the cops (sounds pretty shocking IMHO) but I bet he legged it so the cops can't test him for alcohol/drugs...

I'm quite happy for them to go straight after the driver personally. It all depends on how dangerous the scene is though, difficult to tell without being there.
