5th Gear - Safer Lampost

Did anyone else see 5th Gear last night, in particular the item on a safer design of lampost? The one that absorbs impact energy to the extent that the driver can get out of the car and walk away after a 50mph impact, as opposed to suffering severe injuries when hitting a standard lampost?
I would bet my house that investing in these would save more lives and reduce severity of injuries more effectively than "safety cameras" No return on investment though (unless it lessens burden on NHS).
Will the government be researching the possibility of using these across the country? They're already used by many of our European neighbours.
It would be nice to think that the safety of motorists really is seriously considered by the authorities and that new, true "safety" technologies are looked into (not by an accountant).
