I'm not sure how the two are comparable.

I can't say I have ever struggled accessing the rear of the car when reverse parking. It takes a fraction more effort.
I'd much rather that than run somebody over.

Besides, front in parking makes you look a bit special.

Clearly the shops you frequent have massive parking spaces as all the ones I've ever been to would barely allow you to get out of the car nevermind wheel a trolley down the side to access the boot.

I find it pointless to reverse in, in those circumstances in an E Class estate

This.....

About 15 years ago I was driving along a B road minding my own business, obeying the speed limit.
Morning rush hour, car waiting to turn right in the minor road to my left.
I see him look towards me.
I see him look the other way.
I don't see him look back at me, so start to brake a little.
As I am about 6 feet from him, he pulls out to turn right, so across me.
Because I was sort of anticipating the collision, I managed to dive left and miss hitting him, but I went head on into the kerb on the far side of the minor road and did £1000 of damage to my car.
I successfully claimed off his insurance for my damage.

Indeed. It's unusual to make a successful claim when there's been no contact, but certainly not impossible.
