60mph on Snake Pass nip
Discussion
Going from Ladybower to Glossop I've seen them in 3 places.
There is a long parking section before the first bridge just after the lights, they park as the last car here looking down towards the bridge, the last spot was at one time marked for police vehicles only.
As said previously in the layby after the long straight .
Then in an old green merc sprinter parked in a small pull in through the trees up towards the pub.

I must be about 15 years out of date, because I remember back around 2002 the camera van operator up on the gantry, clocking cars in the 50 limit approaching the Severn Bridge tolls, got into trouble for having the sliding side door open and thus obscuring the word "Police".
I thought that cameras and camera vans had to be marked clearly to give us a sporting chance........clearly doesn't apply in Derbyshire.
Good job I don't speed...........much.

HE HE, many years ago did over 65 on my pedal bike (freewheeling!) down the snake pass - would be fun to see the 'speeding ticket' for doing that
KPH?? Nothing on Strava over 50mph in either direction.Damn nice ride - hope they close it again soon
It's not only camera vans you now have to be wary of on The Snake:

aka the place where it is safest to overtake and not the bit that the 50 mph limit is intended to control.
Yep. That's their usual hiding spot in what looks a tatty old builders van. It's often seen on weekend mornings at that location. Our fleet database of fines shows it is a very lucrative location for them, but I think most of the regular users of that road will know it's there.

You can be doing NSL speeds and come across them suddenly?https://www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk/news/derbyshire-...
The level of damage would be way about a 40 theirs/50 yours rear end. Wonder what their story would be.

I've usually done all my overtaking well before then

I'm afraid you thought very wrong, there has never been a legal requirement to do so, when the camera partnerships existed and were allowed to 'net off' the money from fixed penalties to fund their operations they were meant to meet the DfT's guidelines on 'conspicuity' to do so, if they didn't they were meant to report themselves to themselves and decide whether they should keep the money or not (I kid you not, only a Tony Blair gov't could have come up with that). The partnerships are long gone so even that isn't a consideration now.The infamous North Wales horse box.

From memory, they had to back then. They were businesses, and to actually keep the money they generated, there was strict criteria, i.e. x amount of accidents in the vicinity, marked up, and some others. If they didn't they couldn't keep the money for their non-profit company, but it went to the treasury.I thought that cameras and camera vans had to be marked clearly to give us a sporting chance........clearly doesn't apply in Derbyshire.

Now, they only get to keep the money if you go on a course, hence the rise, massively of courses offered, and the increasing of thresholds for the courses. Kerching, its all about savings lives though, obviously.

Makes a change for the DT, they usually only report on things they can see out of the office window.https://www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk/news/derbyshire-...

It's not the only safe stretch. There are plenty. There long straight before Snake inn (towards Sheffield).
After snake inn there's a long straight, look to the hedgerows in the distance you can check if no oncoming traffic then cut the corner at the end of the straight.
Another half a mile ahead is another long straight that cuts into a sharp right-hander.
