I addition to scraping the number off of the rear, I create a fictitious contact in my phone contacts which contains the pin and the number on the back of the card. Then if you forget either it's easy for you to recover the numbers from your phone. A thief even with your phone would have no idea what to look for.
LastPass or a similar password manager is good for storing card details etc. I use one PIN across all my cards though so I don't store that anywhere.

How did they know your pin?
You didnt drop it - it was stolen. Whats the chances of some random person finding it then shooting off and using it immediately?
yes

More likely someone spots you dropping it and then runs after you, than for an experienced thief to happen to be there.

Unless the 'lost and found' staff at the stations are in on it.

Reading this thread I've now taken my drivers licence out of my wallet as it gives any thieves the rest of the details needed to uncover my identity, will probably just leave the drivers licence hidden in the car from now on.

One thing that has me wondering is what's stopping thieves setting up an nfc card reader and stealing funds from contactless cards that way?

The only time I've been a victim of card theft was at also Waterloo Station where I either lost or had my oyster card stolen, luckily it was only topped up with a few pounds so forgot about it.
Couple of weeks on I had bought a new oyster but couldn't link it online as my old one was still linked to my account, went to cancel it then discovered it was still being used!
Some git was using it every day from Waterloo East to Catford Bridge and topping it up every Monday for the week ahead, I waited till the next Monday and when it was topped up I reported it stolen/lost.
TFL sent me a new one so I actually gained a weeks worth of travel (minus a lost card fee) out of the person that took my card, would have loved to have been there when they tried tapping out and found the card had been disabled smile
