GRP is straightforward.
It's the metal bits & all the clag that's the worry.

I feel for you OP, that really is a bit rough.

Good luck in getting any recourse with the "dealer"

Alternatively, there are different ways to get revenge.

There are enough people here to make a mess of his auctions for the foreseeable, simply stating "car not as described" when eBay come complaining.

Fair enough. I wasn't sure if it was anything more exotic.

The rusty bits shown on the photos don't look to clever. Do these have a steel spine chassis bonded to the body too?

It looks like a deep money pit.

Since it is from Ireland, (Eire) do you need to pay import VAT on it? To register it here, it needs an MOT, (good luck wiht that!), but I think you'll need a customs form declaration and proof that all import liabilities have been paid. If it was from Isle of Man or Jersey etc, you still need MOT but no liabilities to pay, but from Eire, I think there will be?

Yeah, OP, that's... not good. Here's hoping he does actually call you in the next few days. "Ummm" on that, though.

It's a reimport of a car that was exported used from the UK, so I think it's ok on that front?

On one hand my heart goes out to you, putting myself in that situation i'd feel low and sick to my stomach every time I glance out the window and see that battered old rust bucket.
On the other hand however, I would never be dumb enough to spend that much money, sight unseen, to a in a different country whom is obviously a trader, even if I had necked half a bottle of vodka.

You know what they say, play stupid games win stupid prizes, well, enjoy your stupid prize, complete with stupid shower door as a stupid sunroof.

It's actually a cut piece of glass albeit cracked for the sunroof.

Stupid game???
I
I've sold a motorbike to a guy in Swansea, and a range rover to a guy in Sheffield, both sight unseen, and had no issues at all.

I know a trader who has sold 'about 9 vehicles ' sight unseen and never had a single complaint.

If you give/are given an honest description and answer questions truthfully, hiding nothing, the process works.

This is not about the buying process, it's about the dishonesty involved.

....but you were honest, and the buyers could tell.....

In this instance, you have been shafted. More warning signals that you could wish for.

People here have been admirably supportive and that's great.

You have been bent over. Make it legal., If you can. Also, does the Ebay money back guarantee help? they are quite st hot on it. Ahh... you used cash, forget that.....

Judging by your house it won't hurt you too much.

Bin it and move on. And tell your wife she was right.

Looking at Autotrader now the cheapest 2.2S Esprit is £28.5k then another £29k tjhen £32k it then jumps to £48k and upwards quickly.

You are in £9.8k for a Turbo.

It will not cost you £20k to get this in concours condition let alone road legal. You could make some cash on this if you play it right - and what a story to tell the kids.
The thing is stepping back you have the basis for a good car but just need some effort to get over the lack of maintenance over the last 20 odd years from the look of it.

Is it worth buying this so you can have a diner car to assist/reduce the cost to get it back to running order?

Not sure it helps....My friend bought from the same people a 911. The car was described as "the most solid 911 I have ever seen" . It needs new floor pans, rear anti roll bar mounts sheared off broken, the spare wheel and tyre that was pictured never came with the car, having raised this with the vendor and despite prompt e mail correspondence the outcome was " it is only a spare wheel why are you making a fuss, the car is great for its age " etc. Your not the first and will not be the last....sorry.

Was it priced very cheaply to the point that the repairs once complete would leave him with a decent profit?

Clearly not what you’d fancy doing buying a car if described as both of these have been but for any petrol head a keen price for a barn find

At least he's refrained from giving incorrect legal advice as he done on a couple of occasions.

So Task list
1. Engine strip down / full rebuild - new turbos likely.
2. Chassis can it be salvaged or does it require a doner car which itself is scrap but chassis ok?
3,m. body work repairs and then full respray
4. Interior - what can be salvaged / repaired?
5. Can a sunroof be sourced or will it have to be fabricated?

6 how much will it be worth once restored?

OP ignoring be nightmare buying situation it could turn out to be a great hobby to turn it around & save a lovely car.

New turbos? It only has one...
You can still buy new chassis.
