I'll remember this thread if I and my family are ever trapped in a burning building and the fire brigade are taking ages to respond. I'll calmly explain that yes our lives may be in danger, but there might be heavy traffic and we don't want anybody to be landed with a small fine for running a red or entering a bus lane. I'm sure those on here who have previously held up emergency services would display similar sang froid.

"There’s seem to be a secret competition around here to see how much distraction people can cause for other traffic when an emergency vehicle is around.

I have seen people brake, slow down and move to the side of the road when one is coming in the opposite direction. Except there was nothing in front of it for about a mile, it need no reaction at all!”

Absolutely this but also people who just come to a complete stop if they hear a siren. Usually in the most inappropriate place which causes a blockage which then stops the emergency vehicle getting through.

I think people panic, they are kind of put on the spot and freeze; yesterday on the opposite side of the road an unmarked BMW with blue lights in the grille and sirens blaring was making progress and then this guy infront of said police car just full on comes to a stop perfectly adjacent to an island, the police car got through but it actually slowed it's progress as it had to navigate through a very tight gap, if the guy who stopped had just kept going and pulled to the left, he wouldn't have caused any hindrance.

much waving of Dunning-Kruger cards ...

the evidence base on warning devices is equivocal in that it depends on circumstances.

the time 'saved ' by aggreessive barging through heavily trafficed junctions can be negative compared to waiting or to planning ahead and off-siding the junction - although off siding is just as high risj a straegy as trying to barge through ...
