Their word against yours. No evidence of theft. So how else did you end up with your family dog that appears to be a happy and healthy member of your family?
Spot on. They gave you the dog - end of.
Of course if they wish to take you to court they can but I suspect that would never happen and even if it did they'd be laughed out of court.

It sounds to me that they gave you the dog. End of matter.

It’s now your dog.

Don’t go offering to pay for it. That just admits that’s you accept that it’s not your dog.

Do you have photos of it’s condition when you adopted it? If so simply tell them that if they pursue the claim of ownership you’ll report them to the RSPCA. Tell them that you have evidence of mistreatment and the vets were witness to it too.

Your dog needs to stay with you 100%.

Are we conveniently forgetting this happened:

"Now, us knowing what they’re like and exactly how he will be treated asked politely if he could stay here until they had a more stable environment for the dog to live in."

No, don't debase yourself by telling lies.

Report them to the RSPCA, which is what you should have done in the first place.
This. I really hope you have photos of his earlier condition to back this up. Even if you haven't I suggest you tell them you have, and tell to back the FO, or you shall be reporting them to the RSPCA.

All the best of luck.

Thats What She Said said:
Money talks

Give them £100 to crawl back under their rock, and get them to sign a receipt giving your mum full ownership.
Either give him back or this.

Also, it may be they are seeing him as "overfed" if you've posted pics up on Facebook etc. If you have, pay them off, delete them all and never post his photos up there again, otherwise they'll one day see him all happy jumping about with his new happy family and want more.

Once you pay them for the dog or give him back, never have anything to do with them again, no calls, no facebook, just delete the pair form your lives completely.

If that even happened. Where is the evidence?

Yes.
And who is listed as the owner on the microchip?

That is only an issue if the scrotes have read the OP and print it off.

When you consider the dog as the only important individual, the approach required here is really very obvious..

That is a minor nuisance assuming the chip is still registered to the scrotes but again, easily dealt with by keeping a straight face if needed.

The second the OP says "she gave us the dog" The relative is going to pull their phone out and show the FB or SMS message saying that wasn't the case.

I'm not saying don't lie... the end result will justify the means. Just don't do it in a stupid and easily detectable way.

I think the most sensible option so far is just buy the dog.

Highly unlikely to have been updated though.

Council scum will be council scum. Offer them a few hundred quid for the dog and make sure they sign a receipt for the money as stated above. Keep a copy of any message exchange about purchasing the dog as well. The dog cannot go back to them. It’s a ridiculous situation and I feel for you OP.

Without knowing how they are likely to react, I'm definitely with the "tell them you have pics of the state he was in when you took him on and will report to the RSPCA if they take him back" bluff.

Offer them a few hundred quid, then subtract the money you've spent on vets bills from the total.

If they are such odious people your mum must have something on them. Benefit fraud?

Unfortunately not - they're very good at being scum. They got given an almost free house not long ago by the council and they complained that they didn't like how it was furnished and demanded a new one. Guess what? They got a new one.

Do you have a vets report from the time you took the dog. Might be useful.

Yes, but there isn't a more stable enviroment for the dogs to live in. Just because aunt and unc now have a house (that we all paid for!) it is not a stable enviroment, as can be proved by the condition of the dog when it previously lived in similar circumstances.
