I agree, why would you need to put a plate on a car that tries to signify what the car is, I get personalised plates for your initials / name / company but spelling out the make / model of your car is pointless
The whole personalised plates business is pointless but I have 2. The whole things pointless but can be fun.

All DVLA need to do is get someone to create an app in the appstore that anyone can download that allows people to upload photos of cars with dodgy number plates.

The system then automatically sends the owner a letter in the post telling them they have a £100 fine along with the photographic evidence with the timestamp and location.

User then gets a cut of the £100 fine and the DVLA get more revenue.

Same with Parking fines as well. I say just scrap all parking attendants and make an app anyone can download and take the photo/fill out the form and upload. So much money to be saved as well as earned.

It's no different at the minute to driver's with dashcams who upload footage to youtube / submit to police even though it's not their job.

God help if this every becomes law. It’d lead to thousands of busy bodies gleefully dobbing in motorists and neighbors etc.

To think that we used to laugh at the Soviet Union and East Germany. The Pistonheads stukachs would have fitted in a treat over there.

The amount of times I see these plates around these parts I was genuinely starting to think that they'd been legalised.

How good are the ANPR cameras at picking spacing up, though?

Here's a couple of examples from my road alone (I've put X's instead of the letters that don't matter)

1. CL0 8XXX (Chloe)
2. AM11 XXX (Ami, the two 1s moved so close together than there's probably a millimetre of yellow/white between them, but still recognisable as "11")

I strongly suspect that ANPR might struggle with the second one, but a witness would be far more likely to remember the second one ... the first one "Er... CLO ... then some letters"

Holy cow........i really wasnt expecting to cause such a stir as the OP. I can see some people have been out stalking the plate online......damn thats scary smile
For the record my question was purely based around the fact the cameras are picking up on such things now. I had not heard of this recently and was purely wondering if this was a new capability. I never even complained about the fine or being done and i sure didnt need a whole bunch of PH love for sure !

Its a little disturbing that the second post decided to turn the whole thing in to a righteous crusade and somehow this led to me be being a knob a tt and my car and i should be crushed. I think the question has been answered somewhere along the line smile Hopefully this will leave the key board warriors to find another righteous cause of indignance and insist anyone not conforming to their view of the world shall be stoned. I think this is the end.........please god !!

Though some people inherit their double-barrelled name and then face a choice as an adult as to which parent they alienate.

But for those that create them, I agree.

Incapable of prioritising your time then. I used to hold the ivory tower responsible for the performance of the force, however it appears that this attitude may have some bearing on the reason burglary conviction rate is such an embarrassment for your profession.

The fk the law attitude of Chavplaters invariably extends to other criminal activity.
Invariably? so all people with a "chav plate" also get involved in other criminal activity?
You got it bro.

And why wouldn't they?

As Dromedarry66 has correctly pointed out, any miscreant who is prepared to stick two figures up at the law by displaying an illegal Chav plate purely for their own vanity and general insecurities will think nothing of being involved in other often more serious criminal activities.

Hardly rocket science is It? rolleyes

And so many of these Chavplaters are seen regularly driving like a bell end in a vain attempt to further massage their fragile ego.

Wow, there is a leap of logic ......i have an illegal plate and am thus more likely to be responsible for more serious crimes. I wonder if we took a poll of all those currently locked up which percentage had an illegal plate. think about it.......not many why in gods name would you draw attention to yourself. Thats keyboard hysteria at is best. Given speeding is even more of a heinous crime according to the law, we should instantly avoid anyone caught speeding as likely to be a serial killer or at best a kidnapper. I genuinely worry for some people I really do..........
Personally i think anyone with a standard plate is trying to blend in, hiding in plain site their serious criminal behaviour. Only the innocent are prepared to stand out. Stupid?, of course it is.........but stupidity didnt seem to deter your comment so why should it deter mine?

There is a massive difference between seeing a legally spaced, good personalised number plate - which always makes me smile and seeing an illegally spaced, bolts to change letters, tiny writing, stupid font plate that makes me want to cry.
I still think B16 CAT was still one of my favourites. Correctly spaced, no attempt to turn the 6 into anything else, correct font, just looked perfect.
Hence why there are two main number plate threads on PH.

The crappy Chavplate thread and real good thread.

Interesting you refer to B16 CAT.

Some may remember Police Camera Action a few years ago where the infamous fkwit Chav about town B16 BAL actual plate BIG BAL (courtesy of a random screw head) was pulled by a rookie Traffic WPC...Lincolnshire force if I remember correctly.

Of course said miscreant fkwit Chavplater claimed he had always driven around with said Chav plate without any problem (and also had the correct plates in the boot...that old chestnut lol) but rookie Traffic WPC rightly was having none of the proverbial bullst and immediately booked the moron.

Top comedy hehe

Vacuos vanity Chavplaters....the tide is turning. biggrin:

Depends on the context.

It looks ridiculous when you see someone swanning around in a Hyundai Tucson (for example) that has a private reg similar to 'X5 ###', or any similar BMW/Audi related plate. A person should choose personalised to the car, or personalised to the owner - not both.

For example, I had a Panda 100HP and noticed quite a few had "#10 OHP" where the hash is a letter. These all appeared to be correctly spaced, but in the event of a show, I imagine they had show plates. If you try a few variations on your favourite reg plate lookup, you'll see a number of Pandas with that reg pattern. It's harmless, but I don't think it negatively detracts from an enthusiast's car - possibly even making it a bit more recognisable, or attractive to buyers. It would have to be something quite specific, imo, like a lot of the Ford Racing Pumas have 'FRP' plates.

I don't think that's chavvy, but just an effort to make an otherwise arbitrary alphanumeric pattern suit a car.

I know it's way off topic, but just out of interest, what would a normal 10 hour shift contain?

some absolutely disgusting behavior on here, OP has been abused to no end for (if he is telling the truth) removing a space.
People need to get a grip and get on with their life.

Very strange how upset people are getting over it. Cant say I have ever had the need or desire to close a space on a personal plate but never have a felt the need to abuse someone who has. Bloody hell!
