Could be a bit of software that picks up when plates are abnormal or the plate read is not recognised by the usual means then passed to a human to check why .

OP, if any of the following apply to you

your car has a mis-spaced plate
your car has black wheels
you park even slightly across a white line
you own any sort of SUV
you own any BMW except a classic M car
you own an Audi
you own a Peuegot (205 excepted)
you exceed the speed limit by even 3 mph
you think about using your phone on the same day as you're using your car
you have a bodykit on your car
your car has wheels larger than 15"
your car has tinted windows
your car has smoked lenses
you don't also cycle and own 3 bikes
you think cyclists should stop at red lights
you live in a council house
you have a car parked on your lawn
you live in an ex-council house

then you're public enemy number 1 and in breach of the PH tasteful poster charter and the PH taste police will hound you with increasing ferocity until you agree to conform as obviously your taste and how you spend your money and time is not up to you, but instead up to a set of sanctimonious holier than thous on an Internet forum thumbup
Guilty to some but certainly not all. I remember about 10 years ago nigh on every car unusual, fast, modified had a PH sticker on, it was a common site. I rarely see them now , perhaps they have been hunted down online and told to conform or had their PH badges removed in a shameful public ceremony. The last one I did see was on a bog standard Astra. Oh crap, for the record I have nothing against Astra's, their drivers, their emissions and commonality. I cant afford the plate taste police and the peoples front of Vauxhall on my case.......

The place certainly has changed for the worse in the last few years. Just ignore them and get on with life. I can't help you definitively with your question, but I suspect they have a manual team to inspect some of the plates that get thrown out by the ANPR... you probably just got unlucky.

Interesting, as somebody who runs a plate that is both mid-spaced and 2/3 size I should probably keep a look out.

Car does <3k a year though so will likely be ok...where was this van?

Gave up running smaller plates on cars when I realised you were better off running no plate from the penalty perspective.

Jeez ...it was the correct font, typeface etc. one space was removed. And if you think dodgy plates number in the hundreds only then you are sadly mistaken. Can you go and get indignant on some other post now?

No plate still makes you look a tool though.

Well you seem to be the sort of person who would drive around in a car announcing themselves as a bellend and not see anything slightly odd in that ...

Most people would think that that was a bit retarded.

This thread really is useless without pictures or a good description of said plate.

Does that mean you’re breaking the law less than if you did 12k miles a year with it?

I always thought the law was black and white.

was it AB55ABY or ABS548Y or perhaps even A855ABY?
Presumably it was one of three so shouldn't be that difficult to identify the actual one by a simple process of elimination. Checking three number plates instead of one is hardly going to put an investigation back years, is it?
Dunno, but when you consider that many witnesses would describe the blue estate as a silver hatchback perhaps there is an argument for making a registration plate more aesthetically pleasing or phonetically flowing.
A traffic cop told me he didn't mind vanity plates because people could remember them more easily and he could easily work out what the correct registration was.

Ah yes, But if a tool is incognito, are they really a tool at all?
laugh

I'd imagine it's a decent way to be hunted to the ends of the earth if you trip speed cameras with no plates.

Most of the supercars in Cheshire will be OK if it's a front viewing camera as they don't bother with a front number plate at all. It would be like shelling peas in Wilmslow and Alderley Edge rolleyes

Indeed. Never used to be so many joyless sanctimonious folk here, whose initial reaction to many posts is to attack. Pathetic.
