Guy jailed for 102mph on the motorway
Discussion
There is a massive crackdown on speeding in the South of Ireland coming in this year, just as a warning to anyone traveling over to be careful and watch their speed.
This judge is getting ahead of the game. Clear bright motorway in the evening, no priors, no stupid excuses and 3 kids at home with a wife that doesn't drive, 2 years ban and 2 months in jail.
Will certainly change the flow of the motorways which are large and fairly fast once you leave Dublin area, I'd be down twice a month and have not noticed much change yet with 120kmh still being slow/middle lane speed but a few more of these headlines will put the wind up people.

It looks to me that there might be more to this that the newspaper isn’t reporting.
Agree. He was done for dangerous driving, not (just) speeding. Although I do not know how the Gardaí view these things.vonhosen said:

3 children & the sole driver in the household - what a wonderful & responsible example he is setting, a REAL role model.
Do you get vertigo, sitting on your high horse?I’ll grant you that one should consider the consequences before any form of speeding but I’ll wager there’s a large portion of people on here who have got right-foot-heavy one day and nudged it too far.
This driver has been unlucky I would say but throwing people in jail for doing a ton seems excessive.
As for role model, he’s hardly a one man crimewave.
I’ll have to be a bit more careful next time I’m over. Where my family are from is Co Wexford just at the end (presently) of the N11 motorway down from Dublin. The motorway is generally empty in comparison to anything in the UK, and it’s easy to get a bit carried away.
No fixed cameras in Co Wexford I think, a few in Dublin if I can remember, but there are plenty of camera vans. In typical Irish fashion the placement of these is telegraphed on local radio so no excuses really.
Out in the countryside plenty of people think they are rally drivers and I’ve seen a couple of horrific crashes mainly on the fast single carriageways so can understand to some extent

That says proposed rules. Have they been brought into law?

Under the new rules 30kph over is dangerous driving.

This is crazy, the new system doesn't make any allowance for the proportionality of the speed vs the limit or the situation and conditions...

Most would say 80kph in a 50kph residential street with kids running about is a bit different to 150kph on an empty, clear motorway. One is almost certainly introducing an unacceptable level of risk, the other almost certainly isn't. Well done Ireland, you've outdone not just the French but even the Swiss for draconian speeding penalties!!!
Surely there will be a statutory defence in Irish law if the speed limit was wearing a thong before it was violated?

Judge Marian O’Leary appears to be a fking idiot.

Do they still ignore UK reg cars? I had several high speed runs in the south and the one and only time I was stopped was for well in excess of 100 mph in my Impreza. Quiet word and on my way.
No, and a dangerous driving conviction in the republic can be applied on your UK licence. See here.

Can't see why it would need to be written in law that a specified amount over the speed limit can be accepted as dangerous driving given the current definition?
I think the opposite , someone sets a maximum penalty for a particular crime, that should be the maximum penalty someone should ever be able to receive for that crime. If the people do not support the maximum sentence for speeding to include jail, then it should happen.
I don't think they should be passing a law that allows speed alone to be considered a different crime to speeding, but atleast if they pass a law it has been through government so has had the support of the people.
The situation in Scotland is that this situation has been slipped in by the back door, you won't find any international news articles reporting the proposal, because there wasn't one, it was cooked up by a bunch of unelected people and rolled out with no public awareness what so ever.
