I'll get straight to my question; to pay or not to pay?

Long story short, I first became aware when the car rental firm I used debited €60 from my credit card (and emailed 2 days later), stating they had charged an admin fee for supplying my address details to the Italian authorities.

Fast forward a month, the speeding fine arrives - demanding €58.70 if paid within 5 days of the letter being sent (it arrived 15 days after the Italian post stamp) rising to €71 thereafter.

The fine was for being 2km/h over the limit, although the wording is confusing;
"The driver of the vehicle was traveling at Km/h 92 although the maximum speed is restricted to Km/h 90 on that stretch of road. Consequently, he exceeded the allowed speed limit of Km/h 2".

Tempted to just pretend it never arrived, postage wasn't tracked.

No wonder scams works so well.

Not only would I be not paying, but also "charging back" the admin fee - which at the very least means the car rental company has to spend some time arguing, - time which they can never get paid for.

Not again, when are people going to realise that renting a car in Italy invariably comes with hidden 'extras', if not speeding/parking/restricted road tickets then 'damage' to the car if you didn't take the extra insurance.

The type of scam evolves but It's always been the way...

its a difficult one - I'm 50/50.

Do I pay the fine and get it over and done with, or just pretend I never received it.

My concern if I put it to one side is that it could potentially escalate, no doubt they will send further notice asking for increased fines.
I'm not planning on going back to Italy any time soon!

I've replied to three of these exact threads recently.

You have to pay the hire company fee - it's in the T&Cs. Their duty is done now. They have passed your details on. The cops won't fine the hire company.

Just don't pay the Italian fine - they are not organised enough to pursue.

I've done it twice . I used to live there recently.

This is no guarantee. I may have been lucky.
