+1 , easy enough for people to shout the odds when it’s not them stuck in the situation .
At least one person has posted from personal experience.

Plus I'm using common sense*.

The car was apparently almost finished when it was dropped off. It's now over 8 months and the garage has been becoming distant.

  • That's big alarm bells in my book

I agree with just about everything being said here, about the 'mechanic' taking the mick, but for balance, I once dropped an engine off at a garage for a repair. A single cylinder honda engine, with the gearbox inside the crankcase. the balance shaft had a parallel key arrangement on the end, which ran the oil pump, and the end had sheared off the shaft. I looked at the exploded technical drawing of the contents of this thing and basically thought "fk that".

Spoke to the guy, he said he could do it, I dropped it off. Weeks passed. No communication. Chased him. "Sorry, been busy, will get to it soon"

Eventually said "Look, I'm going to come collect it on Friday and take it elsewhere, I need this thing running again" and he asked me to give him the weekend.

True to his word, it was ready to go on the Monday, and he absolutely insisted he would not take payment for the work as a result of how long it had taken him to get around to it.

But, I think it's safe to say that's not gonna happen here OP!

I hope it works out ok for you OP,

It's a shame the Garage is too far away for you to pop in over the next two weeks to see any progress.

My concern (If I was you) is that if he has been that busy over the last eight months what is he going to do with the customers work booked in over the next two weeks ?

Either way at least you will have your car back in a fortnight running or not.

Good luck with the birth of your child OP. Whether the car is ready or not is nowhere near as important as whether the baby is healthy and the birth goes well. That’s your priority. If the car isn’t finished, pick it up in a couple of weeks. Have some cuddles with your new baby first and don’t worry about it.

A baby girl delivered last Friday, and life has been as hectic as expected since...

Anyway, collection booked for this Saturday 8th June.

He has changed his communications, and now replies to emails in a professional manner... rather than addressing me as “darling” (quite condescending and unprofessional in most emails).

Partly I think because I contacted another specialist and that guy, being a professional, made contact to see if the current guy had up to date schematics, spreadsheet of pins etc...

Anyway, he says he has now tested all circuits, all good and he’s now working on getting the CAN stuff working...(the hard part).

4 working days to go... I will fall over if he actually manages to complete it.

Sorry OP but you should simply not let people get away with behaviour like that. I'm guessing it was a play on your surname ? The first time he said that to me I would have ripped his still beating heart out of his chest while screaming 'Flawless Victory'

Metaphorically speaking of course.

Alright Clouseau smile

It’s his general manner, not directed at me or my name, but certainly not professional, and not appreciated.

When your trying to get on with someone and build a relationship, sometimes you have to go with it / play along with the banter... if I had thought it was a personal insult I wouldn’t have let it fly,

Wow, what a position to be in. Hopefully in 3 days time you will collect the car finished as you expected.
I may have missed it, but what is your project car? Do you have a build thread? Sounds very interesting!

CAN stuff now reported all working, dash talking to ECU, PDM talking to switch panel etc etc... he might just pull it off...

Final hardware checks and it might come to life tomorrow... which is almost even more annoying, why did I have to get arsey about it to make it happen almost over night... why delay it 10 months?!...

Anyway...

500bhp? Precisely 0bhp till it works... fingers and toes are crossed!

Glad you're getting there with it, im much like you and too soft in some instances, i just dont think confrontation tends to help matters generally and its no good winding yourself up in line with that confrontation.

Ill look forward to a build thread update anyway!

I find the opposite - dealing with issues head on and face-to-face tends to get things resolved, (and I don't mean punch )

In Email and phonecalls, things tend to get lost in translation, but in person your body language can be read too.
Approach situations like this firmly - but not aggressively - usually yields results.

When you collect it, make sure you drain all the oil and take the rocker cover off to remove all the iron fillings.

I reckon you will get there Saturday and he wont turn up.

Has he sent you pics of the car as he has updated you? Are you sure he is doing it or spinning you a yarn?

If I was you when I'd collect id also take with me a sheet detailing deductions to the price.
I.e. £10 less for every day over the agreed original date of completion. Obviously hand him this when he gives you the keys and the car isnt blocked in any way

Start attempted last night... various oil, water and fuel leaks found.... nothing too much of a surprise really on something like this.

Going to see him and the car today.

What's your plan? I presume it won't be finished. Will you ask him to finish given that some progress has happened? Or still take it away, come what may?
