So I should have trailered it from the dealer 100 miles away who refused to tax it for me?

I know it still doesn't alter the fact that the onus was on you, but what kind of dealer refuses not to tax the car?

I would suspect they declined on the grounds that he had no insurance. No cover note yet received = no insurance. Why not collect the car AFTER taxing and insuring it?

Dealer would definitely need a cover note / certificate of insurance before he could have taxed it in zetecuk's name.
When I bought Mrs Fif's car the insurance co sent the cover note by express mail. That was because they had screwed up with the first one for some reason admittedly, but in the end, the car was registered and taxed on the morning of the day I picked it up.

Collect AFTER - agreed.

But my point still centres around the fact that any diligent dealer would have ensured that they informed the customer of the requirement for an original cover note/certificate at point-of-sale and then when it didn't arrive in sufficient time, had a dialogue with the punter BEFORE he arrived to collect the car.

Still we can't ALL be perfect!

Which surely isn't THAT difficult to obtain...just get insurance co to fax it to dealer!

Fax is not good enough for TAX. You need the actual document. As I found to my annoyance.

And the place that I got my car from would not tax it either. And if I didn't take it quickly (e.g. before I could get it taxed), the deal was off. He was a total To**er though. And i did lump him with a car needing at least £1000 of work.

You bought it 2 days ago with no tax and yet you still used it on the road.

Sorry, but I'd have got it home, parked it up and not used it till the cover note came through and the thing was taxed.

You were asking for trouble IMHO.

So I should have trailered it from the dealer 100 miles away who refused to tax it for me? I could have done I suppose but a £60 fine would be cheaper! And probably cheaper than getting the train + taxi to work everyday until my cover-note came through. Like I said the fine doesn't bother me, I knowingly took the risk and got caught out, no big deal. I probably give £60 to the government everytime I fill the thing up anyway!

I don't dispute that I broke the law. My point was that the law is stupid, and the copper's attitude towards me was bizzare, like he was upset that I had proof to back up my story, all my documentation, and 4 brand new tyres. He was itching to slap some points on me for something!

I didn't say trailer anything, if it was me, i'd have drove it home as you did. The similarities stop there - until the paperwork was complete, I would have used pubic transport or arranged a lift (something I had to do for a week a few months ago and drove me potty).

Garage on purchase of car for daughter. No problems Excise - arranged and taken out by Garage so can be done, maybe on the old pals network?
