Just driven past the ones on Northern Perimeter by long stay 2/3. I was going about 35 in what I thought was a 40.

I'm so sick of driving now - it's just not worth the hassle anymore.
My satnav still says this road is a 40 limit, so just as well I was paying attention to the sign posts and the your current speed flashing signs, but it's not immediately obvious it's a 30 limit.

Can't take the train from anywhere except Paddington or Hayes, or along the Piccadilly line; can't use a bus unless you're cabin bag only because there's never any room for luggage.

Heathrow is a nightmare for public transport connectivity. Stansted is better!

When we asked if the cameras differentiated for vehicles or caught security risks, we were simply told "The easiest way to not come to notice of the cameras is to obey the speed limit."
Whilst I might quarrel with the phrasing, the import of the message is spot on.

I am an airport worker and have concerns about the increased danger to road users caused by the poor communications and the unnaturally low speed limit now imposed on the Northern perimeter road from the Central area tunnel, round via the Eastern perimeter road to Hatton Cross.
I have been in communication with HAL via a landside operations lead.
He has tried to use an irrelivant online article to justify the reduced speed limit and cited crashmap.co.uk to justify and show the sequencing of the traffic signals at the junction of the Eastern perimeter road and envoy avenue (the ones that go red when you approach them), unsuccessfully .

I have spelt out to him that their actions have made that section of road more dangerous, not less dangerous because speed is not that dangerous, whereas individuals driving at different speeds on the same road is. The natural speed for the section I refer to is at least 40mph, a 40mph speed limit is the appropriate and safest limit to put in place.

I have seen some poor overtaking on this 30mph limit section in the last month or so that I have never seen before, over more than 30 years using the road and I myself was frustrated into overtaking an individual driving at 24mph on the single carridgeway section.

Needless to say he is not listening and is unable to see that slower is not always safer. The ANPR cameras and joke communication has lead to several online forums like this one showing contrasting veiws of the situation, this will obviously lead to individuals driving at different speeds on the perimeter road.

I have been driving past the cameras (when possible and safe to do so) at the correct speed for the road, up to 40mph (in the 30mph section I refer to), so far I have recieved no communications from HAL or the police relating to this action.

I have no issue with ANPR cameras used to keep us safe from terrorist and to assist the police in combating serious crime, I have no time for individuals stupidity and lies that make the roads more dangerous.

I also wonder if the ANPR cameras are a test for the upcoming pollution zone charge coming in 2022.

If you consider the different types of vehicle using the peri-track and the different speeds they are going in an environment that is at best precarious, and then introduce Joe Public into the equation, any measures that monitor speed can only be a positive move.
I know that road well and have observed some atrocious driving and mindless moves by all sorts of vehicles over the years.

Past few weeks has seen a bit of unmarked Plod car activity pulling people up, saw an unmarked Peugeot (I think) SUV thingy with window mounted flashing blues pulled up a car on the northern peri early last week, and I overheard a worker on the staff bus complaining that they got done by Plod for speeding after leaving staff car park the previous week.

Maybe a indication that these are not indeed active, and Plod have has to resort to car patrols as they've noticed people are starting to ignore them if no letters have arrived?

Additional camera's have gone up this week.

Basically, it looks like where all the flashing speed signs that previously didn't have a camera just after them were located, have now had a camera installed just after.

So, looks like there is now a camera after every flashing notice.

Hmm, they have the official signs, but the speed limit is 30 mph - half a mile through the tunnel, I could definitely maintain 30. I wonder if they'd care if you were keeping up with the flow of traffic...

I have noticed this, the ‘blind spots’ have gone ,
You could previously go from just past WBC to PEX and not go though a camera and also the same the other way towards the fire station after the right turn for the tunnel.

Maybe a sign that they are actually going to start using them and issuing tickets?

Two locations at least southside have added as well, as you go west past E2 towards Hatton X and another one from Hatton X towards T4 from what one of the guys who goes that way home said today.

If they actually start issuing tickets and not warnings then tickets, it could get interesting. You could have accumulated a ban before the first ticket arrives in the post, followed by another however many. Would they have enough staff left able to get to work to make the airport function?

Maybe we should just observe the new enforcement, 40mph would make more sense though, as previous posted by others 30mph is to slow, there is largely no pedestrian traffic on these roads.

General thought is that its not really a speed issue, its HAL trying to prove its doing all thats asked of it in terms of emissions reduction to get expansion OK'd.
No doubt its part of the 2022-onwards Heathrow ULEZ setup as well.

Was about to say, probably not about safety but air quality, like the batst crazy A331 50 limit.

To be fair the majority of the traffic I see is diesel and there is a shed load of it. I ride past the northern peri road daily, some days I can taste it.

Bit of thread resurrection but couldn't find any recent info on the t'internet on whether these cameras are actually generating fines and/or points.

Anyone know from their own experience or from reliable third parties if they are?

Surprised they didn't put a pedestrian speed limit in that letter, they got nearly everything else.

Obviously missed out limits for planes taxiing on the apron too.

I saw these for the first time today. Couldn’t help thinking they are ‘just’ ANPR cameras painted yellow to mscarade as speed cameras. Much like the red light cameras at cross sections. The fact there’s no speed camera warning sign, but there IS an ANPR warning sign only adds to my certainty of this fact. Plus no one here appears to have actually been fined…? Or is that incorrect? 🤔

There are a few work colleagues that mostly ignore these cameras and I may have gone past them myself at times in excess of the posted limit.

I have never heard of one single person ever receiving a fine or warning since day one.
