Rather than have all this endless arguing about statistics (which I don't trust anyhow) can we not get access to proper reports of accidents? We might then be able to make reasonable judgements about how and why the shunts are happening, and then we may be in a better position to prevent most of them.

It may not be very scientific, but from my own experience and general observations I think a serious mistake is being made by concentrating so heavily on the speed factor.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

But are you sure you passed an English O Level ?

I sure did and I am most willing to be a tutor to you should you wish.

As we are now on insult terms, I am certainly glad I don't need your professional services as the logic you display certainly makes me feel great concern for your patients.

The post I made simply states that the summary of the report available on the University Website makes no remarks to say what has been reported. Perhaps with your elementary English skills they do, with my advanced English skills they do not!

I admire people who have the ability to speak and write more than one language like you as I can’t but then again as I have mastered skills in speaking and writing in Englund, I don’t need to bother.

Strange the reports made from this study when the results went something like this:
1. Cameras are most effective on roads with higher mean speeds
2. Typically a 4% fall in accidents per 1 mph fall in speed
3. 38% fall in slight injury accidents
4. 30% fall in fatal and serious injury accidents
5. Cameras reduce accidents
6. 19% fall in slight and 6% fall in fatal and serious accidents due to impact speed

Dr Linda Mountain said:
We could not detect a significant change in fatal and serious crashes at camera sites

Speed humps and cushions had a significant impact on fatal and serious accidents but cameras didn't. It was a surprise. I expected to find some reduction

the case for cameras on those roads had been "exaggerated".

How can these statements be reconciled?

Presumably because the research team found that any reduction that appeared to be caused by cameras was statistically insignificant. It's very possible that the regressions didn't include enough variables to capture the full effects, hence some errors or non-regressed variables could be aportioned to the cameras, making it appear that the cameras did have an effect when in fact they didn't. Therefore a result of a fall in casualties at camera sites can be found (and seized upon by yourself) yet it can also be insignificant.

Unless I can get a proper look at the report, I won't know if/how many dummy variables etc etc were used and precisely why the effect of cameras was insignificant.

What we do know is that the results of the regressions run are;

Speed humps were found to have a large effect - research team happy that this is a significant result.

Speed Cameras were found to have a much smaller effect - the research team were of the opinion that (for a currently undisclosed reason) the result was insignificant.

Therefore, your original post is insignificant!

Bah, if camera's slowed people down, why do people get caught.

Soooo many people were caught last year by scamera's and vans, enough to suggest that 1000's of lives should have been saved.

Infact, they haven't, and deaths have gone up.

So clearly all that speeding made no difference. Had there been no camera's, all those people who were caught by camera for speeding would have done exactly the same thing!

Surely that is eye-opening enough.

If camera's REALLY worked, no one would be getting caught. Then they would be a success in slowing people down.

As usual, you’ve formatted your response such that you are seen to give a reply, but without actually addressing any key points. Instead you fling personal insults or argue over irrelevant semantics; thereby completely avoiding any awkward questions. At least you’re consistent.

Nice try, but it doesn’t work. You’re no better than Spindrift (RIP)

But ist funny .. mit my logic ...have two drugs now which help people who are very ill get a bit better.

Ist very strange that I can do this...if my reading of reports ist not right.
