Just back from a jaunt down the M42. To all the drivers who are clearly like the OP stuck in lanes 3 and 4 through the "smart motorway" section I would like to thank you. 2.5 miles of Lane 1 all to myself before I had to overtake a caravan before pulling back in. Past hundreds of cars, some with dashcams, some with blood pressure issues as they saw me sailing by at exactly the speed limit.

Some of the cars I passed were well within the "Pistonheads" type of demographic. Imagine. Spend all that money on a car but don't understand how to drive. What a waste. Like the BMW 430 driver I came across in the twisty bit before the motorway. Not a clue how to drive. Loads of braking, even as he was going round bends. Laughable.

Saved a load of time, no stone chips as nothing in front and I think I only had to brake twice all the way from the top to the bottom of the M42. So thanks again for not understanding how to drive.

Problem is, he is correct - tailgating is now the norm, especially on busy motorways, and if you moved over into small gaps for every single person that drives too close you would never get anywhere, because nobody will ever let you back out when you come up behind the next car 5 seconds later.
If tailgating is the norm for you, it says as much about your own driving as it does the people doing the tailgating.
Point me to the bit where I said I tailgated....oh right, you can't, because my comment was a statement about the general level of driving in the UK.

Apologies, you've picked my post up incorrectly. I meant "if being tailgate is the norm for you..."

I guess it depends how we all define tailgating though. People who drive a little too close, not allowing the full stopping distance, absolutely loads of them on the roads.

I'm talking about the angry idiots like white van man, sitting a few inches from your bumper, fuming, taking risks to get past. That shouldn't be the norm for anyone except lane hoggers.
