Bending restration plate rules
Discussion
OK, so no one on here has ever bent the rules on registration plate display right? Wrong.
And first of all lets get the Elephant out of the way. If it looks wrong you are a sitting duck pull-over target.
My question is - what is legal?
For a start, there appears to be no limit to how many registration plates you can display. If you doubt that, just look at any large truck next time you are on a motorway. Most have Dave, Bill, Joker etc somewhere as well as the legal plate.
So the first task of a thought police (sorry safety) camera is to identify a plate. And if it identifies the wrong one.....
I wonder if Alpha owners have any experience here. Normally front plates are mounted to one side. Any of you ever thought of mounting one on the other side eg GTS 2.0; Mi TO V6; GUILLIA
So 2 plates = half the fines, 3 plates 1/3 so on. What do you think?
Also i have been reading the rules. Am I missing something? Where does it say which way around the plate should be mounted
I have a plate with lots of O's 0's and a couple of other characters I'm not going to publicise. Am I technically breaking the law if I 'accidentally' display it upside down?
Stands back....
[ PS There's a guy near me has one NO 11 REG. Presumably the message that comes up when the camera can't read a plate Bet he misses a few fines.]

That proves with out any doubt that it is legal phiscoe said:

If you are that desperate to be noticed by all means display your plate upside down, at least it will give us all a warning that we are sharing road space with a bellend.Stands back....

What is it about registration plates that many people want to do something with them other than display the required information? Very very few people will have pushed the legality or presentation of them. But those that do.........
I have no problem with privatised plates, like ABC 123, OR COM I C , or ROB 123 F etc.
But ever realised that those spelled weirdly, or with spaces and gaps in the wrong places are known as prat plates ?
No matter what you do to your registration plate, it does not make your car better or worse. It just highlights information about the driver. Judge for yourself what that information means and portrays.

Took longer to read the OP than get the answer.https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle...

I actually brought up the subject of multiple plates being displayed a while ago in this thread
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
As for the rest, if your plate doesn't conform to the rules you risk getting a tug, simple as that.

A bit like the highway code - a government document like the one you post and the actual legislation don't always exactly matchhttps://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle...
https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates
For instance the DVLA in that link says:
"The British Standard sets out the characteristics of the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and reflectivity. To meet the British Standard, each number plate must be permanently and legibly marked with the:
• British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
• name, trademark or other way of identifying the manufacturer or supplier
• name and postcode of the supplying outlet."
It doesn't actually state the number plate has to conform with the visibility, strength and reflectivity required characteristics or what they are. Semantics maybe...
So with all due respect you've not posted the answer at all
My Range Rover has correctly spaced and correct font letters, but nothing else on the plate. Save for a grey into silver border, a thin line around the outside.
I have never had a problem at MOT time, nor ever been pulled over by the plod.
I fully expect that if I suddenly started displaying them upside down, I'd get pulled over, then they would also look for anything else to get me on.
Why do chavs have to buy the same car as everyone else, then decide they need to be 'an individual' by breaking the law?

My first job was data entry where a computer would try and read words / numbers. If it couldn't read them properly or if it thought it could but couldn't find any details in the database from what its read, it passed it to a human to manually check. And first of all lets get the Elephant out of the way. In other words, if the computer read DAVE as a numberplate it would check that against the database and find no results, so it would pass the image to a human to check, who would find and enter the real numberplate.
