I don’t agree with vigilante speed cameras however because police should be left to their job.
On that then we agree 100%.

I think you'll find most people on Pistonheads would happily see more traffic police on the roads.

Untrained, grumpy old people taking matters into their own hands. Not really, no.
No they’re not. That’s your ignorance talking again. They don’t take enforcement into their own hands - they report it through to the police so:

a) the police get statistics for free to give them an idea of whether speeds are really an issue.
b) the police get to find out for free which drivers have poor enough observation to manage to exceed the speed limit through a residential area with clearly signed active speed monitoring.

Can you come up with a better solution that’s as cost effective, or you just going to carry on sniping?

Ok, 'barely' trained, and inexperienced members of the general public mixed up with Police 'reporting'.

Yes. More Police on the front line, more Police on the streets, better, and mandatory education for drivers.

More police and better education would be fantastic, but I’m not sure you’ve really understood the issue of cost.

Yes, I fully understand that this useless Government have higher priorities than speeding, and public safety.

Does enforcement of all speed limits have to be a police job? Other traffic offences, including moving traffic offences, are enforced by other agencies. Just a thought, I'm not proposing it should be so.

So is that a no, you can’t think of a cost effective alternative to speed watch that might actually happen?

Do you often choose an ineffective solution to a problem when the actual solution is identified? SW is just a social club, it’s not effective.

In my opinion: yes.

...and yet quite a few PHers are getting upset about them, so they must be having some kind of effect?

I doubt it very much.

It's the Police that review dashcam footage and decide whether or not to prosecute. That doesn't stop a lot of people hating DCWs.

A lot of people simply don't want any enforcement and especially not enforcement that applies to them.

So you’re back to just sniping. It’s clearly effective. Of course there are more effective solutions available, but they also cost a lot more, and as you pointed out: our government isn’t prepared to pay more.

Because it's the same slightly insidious mentality. Members of the public playing Police officers. Probably the same individuals who bore everyone to death telling them that 'speeding' is dangerous, or that woudl report a car for having no tax, busybodies, lack of things to do. I do wonder why any of these people are actually involved with a motoring website, primarily one which (used to be) about sharing the enjoyment of driving? Still, modern society views performance cars as a menace, actually admitting you own one risks outing you as some reckless rebel who hasn't quite grown up, so this forum is only a reflection that genuine entusiasts are in the minority these days.

I am tired of the holier than thou types on here who just moan about others, it's got sod all to do with them, but they cannot help but lecture all and everyone with their immaculate driving standards.

I think they should have their posting rights restricted to SP&L only (and perhaps the football and watch forums, because I don't care), then at least they'd be easy to avoid.

Wish there were some on my road pointing speedguns at the rectums who think they are exempt from the limit outside my house
National speed limit is fair game, so are ex national speed limits pointlessly reduced to 50, but dont be a cock in a built up area. How hard can it be?

Just make the SAC mandatory, every 24 months. Charge £100 for it, no attendance, licence is suspended. Should bring in enough money with 19.4 million licences eh?

What about people that live by a NSL road, don't they count?

Good reason to reduce the NSL. 50mph is on the cards but should it 40mph?

If we're going to use that argument, why should members of the public report crime at all?

Because "enjoyment of driving" doesn't mean "driving however i want to and sod everybody else".

I enjoy driving as much as anybody else on here but if there's a suggestion that my driving might be pissing somebody else off there's no harm in stepping back and thinking about what I'm doing.

You said yourself that you don't speed in urban areas. Me neither, which is why I don't care about CSW. In the same vein I don't care about people with dashcams or people with POLITE vests or Highways Agency, or any other would-be (or actual) Police.
