Does anyone know the penalty for having an out of date tax disc? (currently fully insured, mot'd etc..)

Bought my car last year from a small garage, car had private plates on it. Bought car, garage say due to the private reg, they will transfer them back to previous owner and make sure car is registered in my name for me (but they had to do it because of the plate transfer etc..) Left it to them & forgot about it to be honest.

Since found out they never registered it for me, so sent off V62 form which takes 3-5 weeks to come back. Now I work out in the sticks, where no public transport and cannot get/borrow any other car, will lose job if cannot get to work (house and car with it!)

Therefore I have to risk driving it, what is the penalty for this?

Up to a £1000 fine i believe.
Usually just charge the backtax + a little extra for there time.
No points.

Can be 5 times duty payable plus back tax!

If you are running a large goods vehicle that can be very expensive!

As long as you beack tax it for the period you used the vehicle without, you will be left alone by DVLA. They are just interested in getting whats due to them.

If you are stopped and reported, just make sure that the date i.e. the whole month you were stopped is covered by the tax you subsequently buy!

Why not steal a tax disc from a Leyland DAF truck, then deny all knowledge.

The charges will then be dropped (as per Traffic Plod programme on telly last night)

What tax disk was on the car when you picked it up? And now?

I saw that on traffic cops, good idea, slapped wrist & let off!!

current tax disc is for the car with the registration changed, he posted this to me and I sent him back the one with the private reg on it, but he promised to reg the car in my name (silly boy I know, should have done it myself!)

Good idea wirth back-taxing it once the v5 comes through.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but here's another take on the tax thingy. I went to the local post office at the weekend to buy new tax as my disc expired at the end on Jun, only to be told by the lady behind the counter that there was a tax overlap with the new disc. As a consequence, I did not buy the new disc. I then phoned the DVLA on Monday morning and asked them when my tax was showing as valid until. From their computer, they said December 05!! So what's my legal standpoint on this? If I'm stopped and the police check the computer, my car shows as being taxed until Dec 05, but the disc shows as out of date. DVLA say I need to buy a new disc and then take up the matter with them in writing (at which point I'll never see a rebate/refund ever again!!).

Anyone any clues or suggestions?

If the tax has been paid till Dec 05 then you should be able to nip into the local DVLA office and get a reprint for about £7 if you have all the right docs. I had to do this when I bought a bike and the previous owner lost the disc. Only takes about ten minutes.
