Highway code states you must not wear inappropriate footwear.

I passed my driving test in my socks.
Yep. bk naked apart from socks guarantees a swift pass. Examiner just wants to get it over with.

I've only been rear ended once and that was because the lady got her high heels caught...

Slip them off problem solved.

Fortunately, it wasn't a leather interior.

To the best of my knowledge it isn’t illegal. I gues the question is whether you can press the brake pedal with enough force in an emergency.
Do you struggle to stand up if you’re not wearing shoes?

the force you'd put on a brake pedal in an emergency would exceed that to support your weight. The sole of a shoe will spread the load across the whole foot/ankle.

Racing boots are soft-soled so it's far from impossible but I guess it's down to the individual - several accounts here of driving in socks which I'd have thought are worse due to risk of slippage if hitting the brake pedal in a quick/panic scenario?

My guess is that the RAC do their research.

How? To be fair to the guy, we don't write legislation to legalise things. We only write legislation to make things illegal. There's no legislation saying it's legal to eat, or walk, or talk to your neighbour. As far as I understand it, everything is legal in this country - unless a specific piece of legislation makes it illegal.

To answer the OP, yes I've driven bare/sock footed many times. I have size 15 feet and decent shoes are hard to find. I passed my driving test in steel capped boots. I often have a choice between flip flops or boots - neither ideal for driving. I have a decent enough collection of trainers etc now, but again very thick sole and not ideal for driving. I'm used to it, but I have much more control in my socks.

What I do is if I'm about to perform an emergency stop, I'll quickly slip on my right shoe, thus alieviating any danger from a possible load and/or slippage issue. I keep my left foot free from outdoor footwear though, as I find the increased feedback I get helps with any cadence clutching situation I might encounter..

Surely for the best finesse and subtle control you should use your hands to control the pedals.

Then they would be handles, not pedals!

Perfectly legal, providing there is still room inside your micro-clown car for your 50 clown passengers smile

Kind of neither. Just highlighting that there is no specific legislation saying you must wear shoes.

Personally I have tried it but didn't like it. I felt I could apply more force to the brakes when wearing shoes.
I would hate to be in an accident because of it.

I didnt realise that so many people drove barefoot. I dont know why, but it seems like an odd thing to do.
