What about a Smart ForTwo?
Aren't they all auto? I've never seen a manual one.

Semi auto I believe. But they aren't learning in it, so doesn't really matter, or do you think auto might mean higher premiums?

Quite dear to buy one of those now I’m guessing?

Back when I passed in the late 90's my Dad and I tackled this similarly to you, so I ended up in a 2.0 Cavalier while my mates were all in chavved up 1.0 Fiestas etc, my car had less cool points but was much more fun as it was fast!! (comparatively)

Certainly check out saloons, suspect a 318 might work well?

I would guess that a honda insight (1st gen, the one that looked like a baby CRX) would be a cheapie to insure if you can find one. Any of the early hybrids probably fall into that category.

How about a nice (cough) Nuova M.go or a Q-pod?

Are those those weird French under 500kg car but not a car things? I couldn’t do that to him, just from a safety point of view. I’m thinking the suggestions about saloons is good, or maybe a Prius or such like?

OP says son is 17 soon. Assume he will be learning / practicing in it.

Prius = Uber = Crashed a lot!

Another old trick used to be saloon versions of hatches (i.e. Focus, Astra Belmont) I don't know if anyone makes them anymore

I believe repair cost is also part of the calcs so my 318 idea probably not that great

I wasn’t planning on this tbf. The idea is he passes his test via an intensive course and I’d only insure something once he’s a full licence. No intention of giving him lessons. Tried with my sister once; in my experience teaching family to drive is a recipe for disaster.

Noted re the Prius. Forgot about cabbing. Maybe an late 80’s or 90’s Volvo as I guess not many teenagers do that. Or any one tried this with an old Land Rover (or a more modern thing like a four track?) Thinking built like a tank and whilst it may expensive to purchase it’s got some residual value behind it which would make owning it for a few years relatively cheap.

I saw someone on here suggest a Volvo C30...

I just got a quote of £1700 for my 17 old lad.

I'm not sure I'll find anything significantly cheaper to insure?

My eldest has a Diesel Kia Venga (£30 a year RFL too!) with Insure the Box. First years cost after passing the test was £1500, second year as the black box showed they were driving well went down to £700. This was with a Surrey postcode.

I thought for a 17/18 year old was really good. Two months to next renewal so hoping for something around the £600 mark as don't expect it to go much lower than that. :fingerscrossed:

A friend of mine was obtaining insurance quotes for his 17 year old son who had just passed the test. After the usual high quotes for Corsa, 208, Fiesta, Jazz, etc. he bought a 2-litre Volvo estate & reduced the cost of the insurance by over a third.

Junior (@17) is in an Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 16v Insured in his own name with a black box for £700 for the year, fully comp with Tesco. Limited to 6k miles per year but 100 "bonus" miles per month for not upsetting the spy under the bonnet. Directors of BOMAD also on the policy.

Suzuki swifts of a similar age were the same to insure but got the thumbs down after a test sitting.

Cheapest thing I found is a Suzuki Jimny manual hardtop. 1069 fully comp with licence for 6 months. An earlier one as it’s slightly lower powered (tried a few group 1 things so Corsa, Polo, Citroen C1 and some odd ball things such as a Vauxhall Meriva , a 90’s Toyota Corolla and a Toyota IQ)

Most of that list was between 1700 and 1800. No clue why the Jimny is so much cheaper but it’s winning thus far.

Blimey are you in the Shetland Isles or similar? That’s cheap!

Nope, Yorkshire................got that price via the dafty with the dinner suit and dickie bow.

There are all sorts you can play with online to get the best deal.

Limited mileage, where you keep the vehicle overnight, putting in the driving licence numbers for all the drivers, adding second or even third drivers.

Junior faffed about for ages, different cars considered, another youngster he knows has an old VW golf estate, another cheapy left of field car to insure.

Youngsters insurance is a right old game.

We found that prices were all over the place and until he had is pass paper in his hand the prices we came up with were only ball park figures.

Really? I covered hundreds of miles with both my sons on L plates, in between their weekly lessons with an instructor, and we never had a single crossed word. I was just calm and measured with them, and they were grateful to be getting the practice. All worked out fine.

The same car Alfa Mito 1.4 16v was £350 fully comp for Junior on a provisional licence, NO black box, again two other named drivers, insured by junior in his name as soon as we picked the car up well before his 17th. meant he could go for the all important 17th Birthday drive with me in the Front and mum in the back offering helpful advicelaugh

That was with flux direct. Again looked at lots of options, monthly, short term insurance, Direct line etc.type

Just be aware some companies say out have to cancel the policy as soon as the driver goes from provisional to full licence on test passing.

Got a joke quote from Flux about 6 months later when he passed test, about £1700, cancelled old policy due to passing and got a princely £13 back, didn't think I'd been robbed too badly, for 6 months insurance and I was prepared to drive the car a bit more with no box. angel

A dad of a friend of Junior's managed to get his lads insurance cancelled after the black box reported some "total disregard for the law" speeding in this lads carnono
