Ooops - forgot to renew car tax - how long before fine sent?

No excuse - it's the 21st C just arrange direct debit & then it's little more than a mouse click when the reminder comes through. Simples surely?

There are many legitimate reasons why renewal of an MoT pass is delayed. It is not right that Big Brother (aka DVLA) should then trick its unsuspecting 'customers' into an excessive fine unless said DVLA have previously pointed out (e.g. by letter) that they (the DVLA) have failed to issue the relevant Direct Debit payment request for that month's VED.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just realised my car has been untaxed for 5 days and just taxed it online upon realising. I thought I was paying it by direct debit and with everything going on I simply forgot to check until my misses asked if I have taxed the car today!

So going by the above, I shouldn't receive an £80 fine through the door for being 5 days late?

I wouldn't have thought so because you've paid to tax it from the 1st of the month, even if you didn't do it until the 5th.

There's a handy app for iPhone and Android called Vehicle Smart.

You put details of your car(s) in it and it'll pop up reminders before the tax and MOT are due.
You can also use it to easily check MOT history, including details of any previous advisories/fails etc..

I'm using it to monitor mine and Mrs CnC's cars as well as my niece's and it works well.

I have a thing called a calendar hanging on my kitchen wall. It's quite useful for writing car MOT dates on as well as other reminders. I'd recommend one.

my ex went 18 months without taxing it then she sold it as i got the letters / documents of sale all to my house. They did nothing no fines nothing at all.
