I have a Vailant, been good so far, third winter. I have noticed a whine when it gets hot, think it's the fan, still works ok so I've left it. My plumber likes them but I think that's because they are straight forward to fit, easy connections etc. Lately he's also been putting in Baxi which he really rates.

Make sure you have the system flushed and fit a Magnaclean filter.

Can't help with controls, I have a simple room stat.

I understand Vaillant get the best scores from plumbers repair costs/ability, bosch get the best scores on breakdowns, and the Viessmann are a much smaller in terms of number out there but great really good reviews.

Don't know the answer to the question, we have a Vitodens 100 system boiler and new OSO tank, but I presume your after a combi by the sounds?
I didn't spec our boiler as is now nearly 8 years old and we only moved in 18 months ago, but I will let you know what its like in 5-10 years time if its still going!

Yeah my plumber is a valiant advanced installer so he’s certainly recommending them but I hear better about Viessmann and valiant use Viessmann boilers in their own factories which is telling!

At the mo we have a cylinder and a tank in the loft as I’m boarding the loft out I want that gone and to say we live in a fairly sized 4 bed detached there seems to be no storage, so where the cylinder is will be good for storage, our boiler is on the blink so I’m going to have to do it sooner rather than later!

The Viessmann also has its own storage tank inside the boiler so that’s my plan,

At the mo the cost seems to be around 2-2.5k all fitted with nest controls and remove all the old stuff, to which I could sell for spares/repair

Plumbers tend to have their favoured brand, usually they are on some sort of incentive or deal, or it's the brand their wholesaler sells so it's easy to get kit and they have some back-up.

Vailant do combi's with HW storage.

I replaced my boiler about 18 months ago and three plumbers, all unprompted said "I suppose you're going to ask for a bosch?", all three said that the current mode. (at the time) had a part that often goes wrong in the back of it. One said the easiest way to get to the part is to simply uninstall it, take it off the wall, fix and reinstall. Apparently they have moved to using more plastic parts ?

For those reasons, the three of them had gone off bosch a little, but noted that they are still highly rated. Vailiant too. Viessman were not mentioned.

All three said they'd install whatever I wanted, so I don't think they had any particular bias.

I ended up with an intergas.

Yeah he’s given me a price on that,

How much should it cost to rip out the whole boiler cylinder and lift tank and go to a combo

He says £800

Reasonable or expensive?

I have a Glowworm just fitted 1 year ago. It had it's first service last week and I used the manufacturers service man who is the Valliant service guy too as they are the same group. I have to say I was impressed with the service. He arrived exactly on time and checked and cleaned absolutely everything in the boiler, fitted 2 screws that were not fitted by the installer, checked the flue, tested all the gases and even checked the gas meter. I was very impressed so I would have the Valliant from your two choices.

Seems cheap/reasonable to me.

I don't know, but we paid about twice that for a (system) boiler move and hot water cylinder install.

Excluding student housing I’ve had only 2 different brands

1 potterton utterly useless failing all the time (sp)

2 Worcester in a number of different houses very reliable and parts a plenty - one we which must have been 30 years old given the age of the extension. We called up and they had “new old stock” which kept it serviceable.

We had a Vailant boiler fitted in our old house and it was very good with a few small niggles. In the current house we inherited a Veissman boiler and it’s been superb and 100% reliable, and every plumber who has looked at it, have said how much of a nice bit of kit it is.

Got a bosch greenstar something or other installed. So far so good, infact it's a revelation. Waters hot when I want a shower. Also better than the old style turn on until too hot then turn off. A weird thermostat does it automatically. It's like living on the starship enterprise.

Got an absolute bargain for it aswel since a family member works in the factory so got a staff deal on it. There allowed 1 a year to family members. Comes with an 8 year parts warranty so must be somewhat reliable if they offer that. Although parts are cheap for obvious reasons.

Consider a Glowworm.

Exactly the same parts as Vaillant ( the same boiler, in effect ) but cheaper.

I've been told this by 3 heating engineers.
