It is indeed, something I was used to when working with tractors built in 1970 but not in our 2019 car!

When I reported the fault I told as this to the dealer but they don't seem interested in my thoughts.

I am not going to comment on the make etc.... as I don't want to go down that route yet.

Lets just say its not a bargain basement Chinese manufacturer!
They dealer will not invite you to reject the car.

You should consider what your position with the car is, quick otherwise you will get side tracked.

If you are rejecting the car I would suggest writting a letter stating the facts in sequence and tell them you are requesting a refund. Remember at worst they can reject your request and you are no worse off.

I do not need to tell you, but I will cars that cost £30,000 should not have problems with gearboxes.

I've driven a few late MX5's that have felt like that.
Really? Drove one the other day and the gear change was a real pleasure.

Bit of an update,

Mrs MattyC got stuck in a car park as the car would not physically go into reverse,

Video of the incident sent to the dealer with the threat of sending onto others,

A hey presto new gearbox going in next week!

If it does not improve then we will be rejecting. I am giving them one more chance as we love the car and everything it does for us just need it to go into gear!

I have been looking into getting an mx5 2.0 ND
And then having a bbr turbo conversion done,
From what I can fathom the gearbox on the ND
Seems to be quite fragile with many reports of issues
It seems that the previous generation has a far more stronger gearbox to the point bbr do a conversion kit to swap over to the older type box, so I have now decided on the older model NC when I have the funds
There is plenty of info on the known issues if you have a google

I think that if you accept repair you cant take the rejection route later, only further repairs?Or have i got it wrong?

You have. I rejected a VW after giving them three attempts to repair. Was a bit of a battle, but eventually VW UK stepped in, and I'm assuming, came to an agreement with the dealer.

The dealer principal went from being an utter bellend to all smiles and the most helpful man on the planet overnight. I can still remember receiving the email from the dealer confirming my rejection was accepted. I think I got more pleasure in imagining how painful it must have been for him to write it and have to be nice to me as I did in actually getting the car returned.

So I am back again and guess what.....

Stuck going into reverse 3 times today! Luckily I was driving!

Mrs Matty C is now adamant she won’t drive it again (majority of the time it’s her the sprogs on board 3 and 7 months) and is paranoid about getting stuck somewhere.

I am a bit sick of it to be honest any ideas my rights to reject as the car is now 8 months old.

When I read the OPs first post, I thought clutch fault, more than gearbox. If they have kept the original clutch and haven't checked the operation properly, then changing the gearbox won't help.

It could be something trivial like air in the system, if it hasn't been bled properly, or a badly adjusted cable, if it isn't hydraulic.

Cars that I've had that sometimes haven't wanted to go into reverse, I've found sticking it in second, then going into reverse helps it slide in.

Not saying this will help a real problem gearbox, but just thought I'd mention it in case it helps if you get stuck again and you haven't tried it yet!

I hate it when something I've spent a load of money on doesn't work right, makes me feel sick with anger 😂

Have you googled the problem or looked on marque specific forums to see if others are having the same problem? Could help with a fight with the dealer knowing what others have or haven't gone through.

I'm nosey af so go on, what's the car?

Daughter had a Mitsubishi Colt with a very 'baulky' gearbox and best way to get that in reverse was to slightly raise the clutch to spin the gears as selecting reverse.

Its a breed of VAG that's all I am going to say...……..

The only way to get into reverse is go for 2nd as said above but even that's a struggle to be honest.

When the work was done it had a new clutch and gearbox apparently and it has been fine for 1000 miles but not playing ball anymore.

She is scared stiff of driving after the last time she got stuck in a car park in it.

Reading online if the fault was present when new I should of have no issue rejecting after the 6 months has passed and as they had in twice for the fault when it was only a month or so old I should have no problems.

I am going to give them a call today and see what happens.

I think you are okay to name the vehicle providing you don't name the dealer. You aren't naming and shaming but tying to troubleshoot.

If they really have changed the clutch and gearbox and it still has the same fault, then it must be something else.

A faulty master cylinder maybe? Possibly helped temporarily when the system was bled after the clutch was changed.
