I don't know why the big secrecy as to make of car? Just don't name the dealer.

If you want to reject then you have to stop using.

What did dealer say when you called them?

Does it actually matter? All VAG stuff use common oily bits with different frocks popped on top.

A few tricks of getting a car into reverse for me is, selecting 1st then try reverse, or selecting 1st let clutch out a tad to roll forward like a inch then try reverse.

Had a few cars that had to have the above before going into reverse (i dont know why it helps but it does)

Not strictly true, but feels likely given the details so far...

I’m going to guess it’s a 1.5 tsi - the reverse gear on these gearboxes is not the greatest. Compared to my GTD it is a bit graunchy to engage it.

I'm still going with a clutch fault. Difficult engagement of lower gears and reverse tells me that the clutch is only partially disengaging.

Of all the components on my car (2017 Octavia vRS, manual) I'd say the gearbox is my least liked part.
My Mk2 and my Mk2.5 just felt a bit "notchy" when using 1st and 2nd - and the Mk3 appears no different. Not a problem as such as I did get used to it, but I've driven other cars and 1st & 2nd have felt smoother.
With reverse I've more than once had to pop it into 1st and then into reverse (which has always worked) and again, just got used to it.

I suppose I could class it as faulty - but I know the "notchy" 1st and 2nd is very much a characteristic and the reverse issue would never show itself if I took the car in under warranty.

Wife had a Tiguan a few years back.

I was never happy with the gearbox.

I didn't expect a new car to crunch sometimes when going into reverse.

VW would not entertain it at all.

But it didn't get worse in the 2.5 years we kept it.

Bit of an update,

Came to a very reasonable agreement with the manufacturer and dealer in the finish and brought home an identical car today with the addition of a DSG box.

So the moral for me is if you know your rights keep fighting as you will succeed in the end!

People still buy manual gearbox cars? Blimey.

I wonder if they also get out of their chair each time they want to change channels on their telly rather than use one of those new fangled remote controls? laugh

Yes, because I find a manual much more enjoyable.

DSG's just leave me cold.

I recently bought a manual gearbox car that requires the driver to double declutch when shifting between first and second gears. Why? Because the car is fun.

OP, at first I did a double take when you said that you really like your car despite the gearbox, but then I recalled that one of the cars that I have most liked had a truly terrible gearchange. I put up with it because the car was fab in so many other ways. Anyway, I hope that you can get an improvement.

I take it you'll be travelling everywhere by e-scooter from now on, instead of that silly, old fashioned, takes some effort, walking nonsense? scratchchin
