One of the first things I was taught by my tutor was to check BH and swap them if I'm off...

It's going to be a good pay day next month as I've got two bank holiday shifts because of it!

The country is on its arse. Hundreds of thousands of people being furloughed, and yet we’re paying a premium to officers working bank holidays voluntarily. You tell me if that is a good use of tax payers’ money. There’s bugger all else they could be doing and let’s be honest not a lot they will be doing at work.
I should say I’m married to a police officer so am absolutely not anti police, but am against wasting public money

Ask your other half about skeleton staffing levels on bank holidays, it is not like people just think 'fk it I'll work for double time' as a money spinner. There are always gaps that need filling because shock horror, a lot of people wouldn't give the job the steam off their piss recently so would rather not be there on a bank holiday. Add in this pandemic with isolation and sickness levels and you need anyone willing to work. I'm not working either if them, I could have but to be honest I'd rather have some time with my Mrs.

As for not having anything to do, that's quite frankly utter bks. This weekend the skeleton crews will be rushed off their feet, as they are every bank holiday expect this time you've got wkers having social gatherings that need to be dealt with.

As a last resort still? Or in a more 'up front' manner?

I did, my point stands unless you're willing to elaborate a bit more on why it's a waste of tax payers money and why you think they'll not have much to do.

Failing that I'll just file in my already overflowing bin of
'total uninformed dog st I read on Piston Heads'

People cant just volunteer to work, there has to be a need for them to fill a spot on an already tiny workforce that are actually on duty on PHLs.

Ideally as a last resort but the feedback has been people want more enforcement so its slowly being ramped up. There have been a lot more tickets issued and some idiots have ended up getting locked up.

It’s a waste of tax payers’ money because nobody taking public coin right now should be getting any sort of premium. I’m sure that outrages many, but as I said the country is on its arse, and millions of people are being furloughed so we should all be feeling the pain.

As for not having much to do, you must accept there’ll be less to deal with this weekend than normal. 80% of the population will be home so they won’t be crashing into each other on the motorway or fighting in the streets after a night on the lash. There’ll clearly be some knuckle draggers towing a caravan or having a bbq on the beach to send home, but hey that’s got to be quite good fun. I know domestics are on the up and that needs dealing with.

And the post I responded to suggested the instructor said work bank holidays.....

There will be more to deal with, increased domestics, pissed up bored people fighting, drink drivers still drink driving, OCGs taking shots at each other because your average gang doesnt give a st about a lock down.

Bank holidays, especially easter are always busy, add increased work load due to having to police C19 blah and there wont be many people sitting about with nothing to do. Add in the previously mentioned lower staffing and it's a nightmare. The only quiet bank holiday is Christmas day, but usually only earlies as by the time lates come on dysfunctional people are already falling out and calling the police.

My department will usually have about 40 officers per day, tomorrow they'll have 12 and they wont stop all day. The cost of having those 12 on double time will be less than an ordinary working day anyway, so the over all 'bill' will be less. Hey could always fk it and stay at home though because someone thinks they shouldn't be paid double, see how that works out for society.

And the tutor said to work PHL, and what? If no one else wants to do it and the space is there why not? If there is a demand for that person to work why not let them crack on? Its pretty st most of the time so let's not remove one of the few (but hard earned) times someone can pick up a bit of extra cash.

I think on the whole reasonable people have had a tit full of people taking be piss. Most people are doing as requested but it wears a bit thin when Mr & Mrs dhead down the road decide to have a garden party whilst everyone else has to avoid seeing family & friends.

With the numbers paraded on I can see a big enough number taken off the streets to deal by a lot of handover prisoners; more than a usual bank holiday to have a impact...
