This is attached to all the pumps at a local jet petrol station. If you can’t pay £100 fine which you agree to pay.

I just laughed when they turned up. Spoke to the manager and said last time I buy fuel here. When I explained the signs he seemed to think it was acceptable that if you had to leave to collect funds it was okay to fine/invoice you for the privilege. True to my word I have never been back since.

People make honest mistakes and charging someone £100 extra on top of the fuel is bks. I’m not sure how enforceable it is.

Unenforcable because, quite apart from any other difficulties, the terms of the alleged contract are uncertain.

"Up to £100", and the " may be reduced" bit create uncertainty.
Cheers BV I know your a legal bod so it’s good to hear that. But either way I won’t be going back to a jet station again.

Well, I have a certain amount of sympathy for your situation.

However, surely you must see that you contributed to the problem by not paying by credit card and/or keeping the receipt.
Yeah guess that's fair thumbup I'm a stubborn sod and like what I'm used to, not always to my benefit.

I'll keep this updated with any developments, nothing worse than a thread with no ending.

I am not sure what your concern is. Leaving aside the issues around legality of the signs the £100 only applies if you dont go in to the kiosk to provide your details. The signs are aimed at those that turn up and drive off, not sure how its going to help stop them though!

If you genuinely find you cant pay you can give details and the charge may be reduced. Its probably virtually guaranteed it will be waived for those that do it once. Personally I have only found the inability to pay for fuel once in my life and I suspect post people are zero or once.

That’s not what the manager was saying to me. Which is why I asked him. Basically if you can’t pay there and then and have to go and fetch funds or come back later then there going to fine/invoice you £100 for the privilege.

I initially thought it was for driving of without paying. But the sign wasn’t that clear so I went in to ask. Manager explained it to me so I had to laugh and told him I won’t be back again. Which I haven’t.

The sign even states if you have no means of payment the charge may be reduced. (See the last sentence of the first paragraph in bold under no means of payment section).

You do know that Jet don't own most (nearly all, in fact) of the Jet branded stations, don't you?

That poster will have been put up by an independent operator and is produced by one of the big players in debt recovery for the forecourt industry.

It's designed as a deterrent for persistent 'sorry, mister, I forgot my card' offenders, not to punish one-off and genuine mistakes.

I am not sure that all that many of us are terribly interested in the ownership structures of Jet garages.

The document is silly in two ways. First it makes an ineffective threat to charge someone who drives off without paying or leaving their details an uncertain figure. Then it says that if you fill in the form you may get a reduced charge. Reduced from what? The only charge due is the charge for the petrol, and I do not suppose that it is proposed to offer discounts to people who forget ther wallets.

I’m a bit confused.

The way I read the first couple of sentences you are penalised £100 if you leave the site without paying OR without providing your details with the cashier.

That surely means if you provide the relevant information the £100 charge doesn’t apply anyway.

Correct, but even if you leave without paying or leaving details the document is of no effect, because the attempted contract lacks certainty of terms. An agreement to pay "up to £100" is not an enforceable agreement.

Although slightly away from the forgetting the wallet scenario, I remember there was a garage in Wolverhampton a few years back that had some stinger- type spike things installed that they could raise up from the ground if someone tried to drive off without paying. I’m not sure if they were ever deployed in anger, and it did strike me as a bit of a liability nightmare. The idea seemed to quietly disappear over time anyway.

Can I just say that I think the OP should have kept the receipt, and should have settled the debt using a card.
