Non payment of fuel

My father still goes in to his local insurance broker. Talks to a representative who no doubt using go compare or some such site. Give him a quote and he pays in cash.
I have explained this is more expensive but. He had good service from the broker when he had an accident in the past. Says he would rather be able to talk in person with someone.
My dad is mid 70s never sent a text message in his life. Doesn’t have or want the internet. Has no interest in sky TV because all the menus confuse him (uses a TV guide and manually punches channel numbers in on free view), doesn’t have a single direct debit. Simply takes his bills to the post office and pays them.
You can only lead a horse to water you can’t force it to drink. He is old, stubborn and stuck in his ways despite mine and my brothers best efforts he simply isn’t interested.
Whilst I admit these people are getting less and less as they pass. But I imagine it’s still quite a few out there.
Sounds the same as my FiL who is 82. Cracking bloke but...I have explained this is more expensive but. He had good service from the broker when he had an accident in the past. Says he would rather be able to talk in person with someone.

Has 3 cars and uses a broker for insurance for 2 of them. The 3rd is a RR which is in his garage and comes out once a year for its MOT. He uses the RR Club for insurance for that.
Takes out a wedge of cash from the building society (doesn't have a bank account) and pays all his bills with cash.
Gets his gas from British Gas; his Electric from whoever took over when "The Board" changed name; and his telephone from BT. Has never negotiated or asked about a cheaper rate on any of them.
Has no internet and no interest in getting it. Will watch any sport on Freeview TV but will not even letting us entertain the thought of getting BT internet for him so he could get BT Sport. Forget Sky TV...his default answer is always "No".
We got him a mobile with large buttons as he struggles with small ones. He 'says' he carries it with him when he is out and about but we aren't so sure, we think he is just humouring us! Text messages would be an alien concept to him too.
We call his house "1970's World" as that was the last time he decorated
We love him to bits but he is as frustrating as hell for my wife, his daughter. His grand children think he's hilarious

I'm not the most sympathetic for petrol stations that complain of fuel theft, but don't take steps to prevent it, they are clearly making a business decision that forces all customers into the shop with the hope they will buy a sandwich is worth more than the predicted stolen fuel.
I much prefer to use a pay at pump, near my work a brand new shell garage has opened, but without pay at pump, whereas the sainsburys 0.5 miles away has recently refurbished all the pumps to include pay at pump, my business goes to the sainsbury's as it is much quicker. (Particularly with the 2m queue and limits inside shops)
Don't most Shell garages allow app payment, I think using PayPal? Especially if it's a brand new one. There's a "Pay at Pump" button in the app - added bonus is that you'll get their loyalty discounts too. I'll admit that I'm too old school to use an app to pay for fuel, but if P@P is your thing I would expect you can use it at your nearest Shell.I much prefer to use a pay at pump, near my work a brand new shell garage has opened, but without pay at pump, whereas the sainsburys 0.5 miles away has recently refurbished all the pumps to include pay at pump, my business goes to the sainsbury's as it is much quicker. Its the way forward but arent you the devil incarnate if you pull out your phone from your pocket on a forecourt with the expectation you will spontaneously burst into flames if you happen to look at it never mind pay on an app Edited by pavarotti1980 on Tuesday 23 June 11:44

There might be some who believe that a low powered electronic device is enough to ignite safely-contained fuel, but hopefully that myth has long since been busted. You'd hope Shell's staff are well-trained enough that they let customers use their own app as it's intended.

The issue is more that if you have your phone out whilst refuelling then you're not paying attention to what you're doing with large amounts of flammable fluid.

Merely having a phone in your hand will immediately cause an explosion that will wipe out the neighbourhood.

Nope - despite being a brand new Shell station you can't use the Shell app their. In addition - I don't want to be tied into a shell app to use pay at pump - other stations with pay at pump still allow the collection of loyalty points through a barcode scanner / loyalty card.

Afternoon everyone. I think it was late Feb early March I filled my car up then realised I didn't have the amount of cash on me I thought I did. I dont carry a card so that wasnt an option. Filled out the paperwork agreeing I owed the money etc personal details and agreeing to pay the debt within 7 days. Went back into the same station 2 days later for more fuel and cleared the outstanding debt while I was in there, in cash. I was told the matter was resolved. End of story. Fast forward to this morning and I receive this text...
Private Reminder to pay £86.07 for fuel from Newbury Extra on 20/03/2020 Car reg (removed) Please pay now by Calling 0151 222 6702 Ref B2007619 Thanks
Upon checking my emails I received an email 4 days ago from a debt recovery firm. Saying if payment isnt received within 7 days of receiving the email the matter will be persued further. I have replied by email saying that I settled the debt 2 days after not being able to pay, it should be on CCTV me doing so and the amount should show on their books. I remember it being between £40 and £50 that I filled up with then couldn't pay for. When I settled the debt I'm sure I was given the normal receipt that you get, I no longer have this though. I'd apreciate any helpful advice please as to what I can do to show that ive cleared the debt etc. Last thing I need to worry about now. Cheers.

Man fills up car with fuel, while not being sure exactly how much he has to pay for said fuel. Returns after 2 days with sufficient cash to fill up there then and to clear previous debt. Does not ask for a receipt
Very funny.

If the wife wasn't included you would say 'it's never happened to me' you would not say 'it never happened to I'. As it is good grammar to put the wife first (as it is in real life!!) then the sentence should read:-
'it's never happened to my wife or me'.
Or if you prefer 'my wife and I have never had this happen'
I had this happen to me at a petrol station that was about 400 yards from my then flat. The guys running it were absolutely adamant that I wouldn't be leaving without payment.
I just locked my car, walked over to my flat and returned with my wallet. They were very over the top about it when I was a regular customer, and explained that my flat was in sight of the garage.
I did once stick £20 in the tank, pop to the cash point on the forecourt and draw cash then totally bypassed the kiosk and drove away.
Police officer who turned up at my door was very amused and said "we knew it was a mistake, as when people steak petrol they usually steal more than £20 worth"

Why is my version wrong? "My wife and me".
It should be 'or' not 'and'. Your version implies you would both have to be together when the event hasn't happened, where I assume (and this maybe where it goes wrong!) that you meant that it hadn't happened to your wife, neither had it happened to you pavarotti1980 said:

Esso/Exxon did a pretty good job of destroying the neighbourhood in Alaska...
Not quite on the same level as a small village in the north east of England and getting screamed at for holding phone in hand Get lost, the lot of you. We're married, not joined at the hip. We are the two people in our household who purchase fuel at fuel stations. We are rarely together when we do this. The scenario described has never happened to me while purchasing said magic fluid, nor has it, to the best of my knowledge, happened to my wife.
