should it be made mandatory to carry your driving licence card and some new short form of log book when driving? if not, why not?

it is in most other countries and would be a very simple way of avoiding/punishing lots of the driving while banned/untaxed/unregistered/uninsured car business that goes on in these 'traffic cops' programmes and would speed up police work, freeing them to go out and 'catch real criminals'™

spose yer right, though there is number plate spoofing to consider, not that a log book would be forgery proof, but it would be one more safeguard

what about the licence though?

If I carried my licence/insurance/MoT around in my pocket no policeman would be able to read them unless I'd only been doing it for a couple of weeks.

Given the reluctance of clothing manufacturers to realise that pockets actually serve a useful purpose and therefore need to be made a reasonable size, I doubt I would be alone.

Nice one. SO when the car gets broken into, they open the glove box, and hey presto - a legal sale. Somehow doubt your insurers would be very happy with this, either

I don't carry a wallet as they're too bulky if you're not wearing a jacket. And documents in the car is not big, or clever.

Carrying the legal doccy is a requirement in many countries across Europe.

MOT, V5, Drivers licence, Green Card, breakdown insurance doccy ...

Not to mention passport, credit card, E111 and spare photocopy of passport.

And her indoors wonders why I won't take my coat off when we go abroad.

I always carry my plastic licence, but the counterpart is a PITA. Most of my customers need to see it on a regular basis, so it is now starting to get a bit dog eared. I bet they charge for a replacement - anyone know how much?

Thinking aloud, would a plastic credit card size "registaration document" be a good idea? Obviously the paper one would remain, but at least you would be able to carry the vehicle docs in your wallet.

£19 for a duplicate. It's easy if you already have a photocard license though you can just ring up 0870 240 0009 and give them your credit card details.

When they make it mandatory I will probably carry a gun and just shoot anyone who stops me. The continued penalisation of the non criminal majority by expecting them to carry out administrivia unpaid will eventually lead to the destruction of society. Targeting crime might be an idea.

Carried my licence with me for about 12 months and it dissolved in my wallet..... Its now held together with sticky tape and can only be handled using white cotton gloves.... Keep meaning to send off for a photocard one but i resent having to pay even more for the right to drive my legal car around on the public highway...

Don't know what you people get up to with your wallets.

I carry my DL and passport around with me, have done for years, both still in excellent condition including the paper counterpart.

Keep it in the little plastic wallet DVLA provide, you know it makes sense.

pause for cracks from those born outside God's own country about Yorkshiremen, wallets, moths. Heard em all, I'm not mean just careful.

In Italy you have a log book and a cert of ownership. Former kept in the car, latter kept in the safe. I wouldn't mind going over to that system as long as we don't get the Italian method of selling cars:

Agree to sell car to mate.
Book appointment with solicitor.
Book a morning off work.
Take ID and car docs to solicitor.
Wait in waiting room for hours.
Solicitor checks ID and docs and asks a few questions.
Sign forms.
Buyer pays bill for about 450 Euro!
70 for the solicitor and the rest for the govt.

Makes the "free and by post" system in the UK look good eh?
