I always carry my plastic licence, but the counterpart is a PITA. Most of my customers need to see it on a regular basis, so it is now starting to get a bit dog eared. I bet they charge for a replacement - anyone know how much?

www.dvla.gov.uk/forms/pdf/INS115.pdf

£19 for a duplicate. It's easy if you already have a photocard license though you can just ring up 0870 240 0009 and give them your credit card details.

If you've only lost one part of your license, you have to go to a Post Office, fill out a form and send back the bit you still have. If, on the other hand , you have lost both parts, you can just give them your credit card details over the phone.

It's up to you how honest you want to be

Mines been in my wallet since I passed, but is now in about 16 hardly held together squares and illegible across all the creases.

Looks like an old treasure map.

Silly Plods, it's all on a computer anyway. Pain in the arse having to prove yourself when they already have all the proof if they could be arsed doing it themselves!

Lead to the destruction of society...?

Oh.. please

Life is one big society or you wouldn't be on this chat room now!

Indeed a poor choice of word, civilisation would have been better.

Keep it in the little plastic wallet DVLA provide, you know it makes sense.

Except they don't any more, and haven't for some years, provide a little plastic wallet, so keep a tight hold on that one FiF, it's becoming something of a rarity.

Talking of licence, never did work out how they expected us to sign our "usual signature" in that little box...........

The signature shown on my photo licence looks sod all like my "usual" one having to squeeze it into that box.

In Italy you have a log book and a cert of ownership. Former kept in the car, latter kept in the safe. I wouldn't mind going over to that system as long as we don't get the Italian method of selling cars:

Agree to sell car to mate.
Book appointment with solicitor.
Book a morning off work.
Take ID and car docs to solicitor.
Wait in waiting room for hours.
Solicitor checks ID and docs and asks a few questions.
Sign forms.
Buyer pays bill for about 450 Euro!
70 for the solicitor and the rest for the govt.

Makes the "free and by post" system in the UK look good eh?

Yeah but it stops 'community scrotemobiles' being bought & sold

Of course when National ID cards come along, it'll be simple. All cars will need to be fitted with card readers, so it will be a very simple matter to check who was driving and whether they had valid insurance for that vehicle at the time.. The system will know who was driving, where, when and at what speed.

No more "It weren't me wot woz speedin', it woz me mate wot woz over from Godknowswheristan" facile defences over the identity of a driver caught speeding - your card in the slot, you pay. Could even be directly debited from your bank account.......

MAke sure you always have at least one passenger ... if they don't stop you, they will only know from the embedded RFIDs who was in the car, not who was driving - Streaky

Don't carry my Licence mainly because I don't like carrying a wallet and they fall to bits in your pocket plus when I last changed address, I got a new licence, went on holiday a couple of weeks later and got pushed in the swimming pool fully clothed, with licence in pocket - had to get a new one on my return!

Also mine has a 'few' points on it, including some expired - hardly likely to encourage mr plod to use discretion ..... So a quick question for any Plod, if you stopped a motorist for, say speeding, and were considering using 'discretion' would the fact that the motorist had his/her licence with them influence you? and would it be 'better' if said licence was clear of points?

should it be made mandatory to carry your driving licence card and some new short form of log book when driving? if not, why not?

it is in most other countries and would be a very simple way of avoiding/punishing lots of the driving while banned/untaxed/unregistered/uninsured car business that goes on in these 'traffic cops' programmes and would speed up police work, freeing them to go out and 'catch real criminals'™

As I understand it, there is already a legal requirement to have these documents with you whilst in charge of a vehicle. For practicality though, a legal defence is to present them at a Police Station at a later date (within 7 days). Hence, the 'Producers' handed out by the BiB.

If the bib know about your insurance now via access to an insurance database and the MOT one is coming soon (via VOSA, any one know when?) why do you need to produce? Police stations are never open when you want one and you have to wait ages to get to the desk. Sure it is every now and again but even so, better thing s to do with my time.
