Caught Speeding at 108mph

Similar thing 10yrs ago or more. 107 on the M62. 6 points, biggish fine, no ban. I did get the best Barrister I could afford, one hour with him, his clerk / solicitor colleague for the court appearance of 10mins or so. Cost me £500! The guy at court told me that, as I'd paid 'Up Front', I'd got a good deal. If I'd opted to pay after the court date, it would have cost about £1K - £1200!!
Went to court 'Suited and Booted', was very contrite and apologized profusely! One guy at the same court for repeated driving offences, asked me "You my Brief?" When I explained "No, Here for speeding!" he looked at me and just said, "Oh, but you're wearing a suit!" Then proceeded to tell me about his driving offences, car theft, dangerous and drink driving, etc. No Shame at all, they were like badges of honour, every conviction. He expected another lengthy ban, small fine to be paid weekly. My solicitor stopped me paying my fine there and then as, "They'd listen to my card details and empty my account if they could"!! tts!!

Years ago I was done for a similar speed. Employed a specialist lawyer and got a 28 day ban and £350 fine. I didn't get any points.

On another occasion with another lawyer it was no ban, 6 points and a similar fine or more

You would think I would have learnt my lesson!

Your story sounds like 100000% BS. No Court can just magic up a fresh charge on the spot as a response to the way a defence is conducted. Again, stop giving credit to pub chatter.


OP, the date error is irrelevant. The law does not deal in trifles. As an ops man, why can't you work from home? Also, be realistic - your life has not been crime free, you just haven't been caught before.

You didn't get banned. I do not suppose that you imagine that the lawyer spent only ten minutes on your case.

Get a decent lawyer, plead guilty, get suited and booted, let the lawyer do your talking, be apologetic and contrite. Take whatever you are given with grace. If you get banned, open an account with a taxi firm , or find someone local who needs work and pay them cash to drive you around, or take some holiday. I got 30 days ban many years ago for "115 and going away", so I leant my car and fuel card to one of the lasses at work who picked me up and drove me home every day, worked a treat. I worked on the basis she couldn't thrash it more that I already had, so it would be fine, and it was. Good luck though, fingers crossed you get lucky.

This annoys me too. I once needed a mega expensive lawyer - time infront of the judge maybe an hour, billed probably 100 hours, she prob spent 30% more than that on it above those 100 hours.

I didn't mean he only spent 10mins on my case BV, I merely meant I spent 10 mins in the court! I had a couple of minutes with the guy representing me at the court, then maybe 5-6mins in the dock!!
I'm very grateful to both of them!! (I would have paid the £1K-1200 to be honest, I did have a slight smile when he told me though!! )

Take out that bit and he probably would have got more sympathy.
I'm sure the OP feels bad and I hope he avoids a ban but it's still at least 38 mph over the limit.

It does help to be smart, though it did nothing to reduce my ban when done for 24 in a 20 in the summer. Recent news reports are saying the days of "Hardship" are over as sentencing guidelines are changing. It may take a while to go through the court system due to COVID-19 and a backlog... from initial offence last September, I finally went to court in August.

Point of detail. He was hating on wannabe salesmen. Maybe he loves all salesmen but hates the wannabes. Or..., maybe not.

Talking of salesmen (or should I perhaps say pimps?), it pains me to say that - with one exception* - all known barrister's clerks get the suits right but always get the shoes and the cufflinks wrong. It is how you can spot the difference between the barrister and the clerk when at a drinks do.


* The Senior Clerk of Blackstone Chambers - he has the right suits, and also the right shoes and cufflinks. I add that female barrister's clerks are usually as well dressed as female barristers, which is to say very well dressed indeed.

SHE has nothing against salesmen. But the manner of dress of some of the younger ones (typically hailing from Essex) leaves much to be desired.

It's quite alright. It's very common on PH, especially since I like to discuss engineering topics and driving technique rather than asking for help in finding a pair of eyelashes for my car - although admittedly I do own a hairdresser's car. But when critiquing the style of dress of "men" it's perhaps more useful to understand the gender perspective.

And to the person who said it pays to look smart. That's as true in a magistrate's court as it is anywhere else. They say one should dress as if unknowingly about to meet the future love of a lifetime. I should listen to them.
