When did M25 cameras switch on all the time?

I've been caught by speed cameras twice on the M25 - when the variable speed limits were NOT active

The first time was after leaving an area that had been covered by the variable speed limits, so assumed i'd just missed something

But the second time was between junction 14-15 and there were no variable speed limits at all that morning

So my question is, when did these cameras get switched on all the time, and why wasn't there significant publicity about it ??

Obviously shouldn't have been speeding, but I honestly thought the cameras where only active when variable speed limits were in force...i'm sure i'm not the only one!

They still check for the standard 70mph limit.

But i've not changed my driving habits in 10+ years, but now i've suddenly got caught twice in 6 months by Surrey Police on western part of M25

So they must have changed thier policy to suddenly activate these cameras ....

Am I the only one that thinks this has changed?

I still see cars exceeding the limit quite considerably every day between jct 12 and 15, even with temp limits.

But I haven't seen the cameras flash in years!!

90 mph - all too easy in a BMW M5 :-(

Cameras have always been "on" it's just how far over the limit do you have to be to trigger them. At 90mph i'd say you are way past the tolerance that is built in to allow for speedo inaccuracy.

I have seen people on SAC Having done 81 on M25

I didn’t think they were on permanently, I drive between the A3 and m1 weekly, haven’t seen any flash yet, but plenty of cars going by me through the cameras, I drive my van between junction 23 and 25 daily, often see the cameras go off but only when there is a limit displayed on the gantry.

Tbh. M25.. stick to 80 and you’ll be fine unless is marked down.

All too easy in the tiniest modern shopping car. Having a BMW is no biggie.

The publicity is there, as noted above - big camera signs.

Thought the HADECs ones, GATSOs and yellow ones on the side of the gantries did flash - just the Truvello ones, plod with hairdryers and vans don't?

There are certain roads I don't mess around on, especially since I encountered speed camera vans at night once a few months ago! (A1 south, don't think it was far from the M62 turnoff. Curious to know about forces doing that now). Keep Waze and TomTom Go on if you have CarPlay in your M5.

It's hard to get concrete information on this, but from what I've read on here and elsewhere, most of the above-lane cameras on the southern section gantries on the M25 may NEVER have worked. Or if they did, it was only when the variable speed limit was in effect and/or they gave quite a lot of leeway.

The change in the last couple of years is the new HADECS cameras that are mounted to the side of the gantry, which are definitely on all the time, and will earn you a ticket over a certain speed, even if the variable limit is not operating. At least there aren't as many of these at the moment, but there's enough that it's hard to remember where they are if you don't use the M25 regularly, or aren't 100% concentrating...

For me they've had the intended effect, and I just drive more slowly.

Did 79 mph between M3 and M40 twice on Monday and none flashed.

Of note, M3 south bound flashed at a van as i went north bound, but they never flash at me doing 79 mph
