No I'm not kidding - but the good news is that so far its only in Italy...

SEA: SPEED TRAPS FOR THE SEA
(AGI) - La Spezia,Italy, July 1 - To combat speeding off La Spezia and above all, in the city's port, the city is experimenting with a speed camera. The experiment is the brainchild of the Port Authority's head, Ilarione Dell'Anna, in connection with an increase of sea patrols. The speed trap used will be the same as those used on the roads. As Dell'Anna points out, there is no fixed speed limit, the ordinances speak of 'safe speeds' which leave significant room for interpretation. The use of the speed camera will permit photographs of the situation in which the craft was travelling at excessive speed and thereby make the issuing of fines easier. (AGI) -

Ah Puggit - memories.

When I was Task Force Commander one of my Units was the UWSU (Under Water Search Unit) based at a fair City on the Ouse. Regular complaints were made from the boating fraternity of light craft speeding, (River ordance 5 mph) and thereby creating a wash that not only upset other boats but led to some erosion of the river banks.

Being ex- traffic, yes I can see the grey matter churning, I took a HR8 Hand Held Radar and made tests from the Units Zodiac inflateable. Sure it picked up the speed but I was not satisfied that this was the speed of the speeding boat or the bloody great bow wave it created so had to abandon the exercise.

Never did crack it and before considering stop watch and measure, was posted back to beloved section traffic.

They have used handheld speed cameras on the water for years. 10 years ago I used to escape from the harbourmasters lackies in local town when breaking the 8 knot speed limit

Mates with more powerful boats used to bait them into pursuit & then leg it. Thet were never going to chase too much as they were invariably needed to rescue tourists who had drifted too far in their £5 inflatables!

If they caught you, you would get a dressing down & possibly a fine. Pity they never tried to educate those who would get so drunk they could hardly walk & decide to pilot 40' boats in pitch dark......

My mate has a speeding fine on his wall at home, doing 35mph in a 4mph limit on a bit of sussex's finest stretches of inland waterways

We were waterskiing at the time

Forget the spelling, it's just Windermere, not Lake Windermere.

Question: How many lakes are there in the Lake District?

One, Bassenthwaite Lake.

NB it isn't Lake Bassenthwaite. Must be something in the water up there.

Last time I was in the lakes the locals told me nobody wants to opperate the guns anymore cos everyone has been badly affected by the implimentation of the silly speed limit. Water skiing still occurs on Windermere and the speed gun people have had their kids bullied at school. Sometimes the plans of the lentilists just become so silly everyone ignores them.

Im in no way an advocate of bullying but I think thats quite an appropriate way of illustrating ones disapproval. Perhaps then the kids wont turn out to be lentalists.

Now if only this would happen to scamera operators and their offspring...

(this is not a death threat ect, but merely pointing out that a good kicking now and again for those related to or involved in "underhand" tactics of speed enforcement might do them some good)

Agreed, I guess eventually even really stupid people realise when a job is bad activity. No wonder almost no-one in America could be encouraged to enforce the silly prohibition laws.
