That's exactly what I would have expected to happen - except for the other driver (originally at the scene) saying he didn't realise my nephew was stationary and indicating to turn right. He changed his story on the statement to his insurance company to my nephew was "doing a U turn without indication and without warning just in front of him"

The OP insurance then disputed the fault (and liability for any costs incurred) - all the way to 30 mins before court
I had a similar happen.

To be fair the young lad owned up and contacted his insurance company.

I got a call from them asking if I needed another car. As I had other transport (a van) I just said no. It might not have cost me anything but everyone pays in the end.

I would have only had it an few days anyway as an assessor came out, looked at my car and pronounced it a write off (Fiat Panda worth about a grand on a good day). I believe as soon as the money is in the bank the hire car needs to go back so again it wasn’t worth the hastle.

In other circumstances the hire car might be a necessity so you can’t really generalise but it’s everyones duty to minimise unnecessary expense whether it directly affects you or not.
My Citroen AX got t boned by a drunk driver and ended up nearly a foot narrower than when it left the factory, so obviously written off.
It took Churchill 2 weeks to come to that conclusion though, during which time I had a 'delightful' 1L Punto. They wanted that back the day they decided to write the car off, which would have left me stuck without a car - didn't have the spare funds to buy another.
Eventually they agreed to let me keep it for 2 days after the cheque arrived, which ended up taking another 2 weeks as it got lost in their internal mail...

Some AMC on here, cant remember the one. They sorted me out a Mk1 Elise when my Z4 got hit by a bus. I only accepted once the other side had said they were ok with the cost in writing.

had it for about a month, suspect the bill was huge.

these AMC are ambulance chasers of the finest order

Self inflicted or own goal for the insurance companies - they want to reduce heads and outsource claims management - then they get pissed when the AMC’s generate inflated claims - brilliant work IMO

I am not impecunious and was in this situation. My claim manager asked the other side if they could provide me a car of the same group cheaper than they could. They failed to supply a car or even reply and then refused to pay the bill. It went to court, I was asked to attend. All the judge asked was if the car was a similar class to my A8, it was a Mercedes S Class so he was happy with that. Secondly had the other side been given the chance to provide me a similar car at a better rate. The answer was yes, and he was happy with that. They claimed that a S class was grossly excessive, he refuted that as they had to put me so far as possible where I would have been had their client not mashed my car and had been given the opportunity to do so. He found in my favour and they had to pay up including my costs.

This was in 2019.
