I'm trying to explain that masks forced on a real world population in real world scenarios do nothing to prevent a virus. So, as the thread title, what is the point?

Especially when I take it off to sit down and eat my meal.
Because they reduce transmission and infections when they are used. Not eliminate not prevent all just mitigate. Your argument is soldiers shouldn't wear body armour because look at all the soldiers who get killed in a war.

My local surgery in London asked me to wear one today. All three reception staff behind the plastic screen were mask free. I took it and put it in the bin. The GP continued the charade by wearing one, but didn't mention that I wasn't. Mental.
Why did you visit a GP when you think you know more about medical issues than they do? I mean I don't know what ailment you wanted treating but are you sure you trust their diagnosis and prescription? You might have been better off just googling the answer.

In fairness Francois did diagnose himself pretty accurately.

This topic was raised in the video I posted above. Doctors are experts in medicine. They aren't experts in preventing transmission of airborne viruses using masks.

Do you ask a policeman to advise on case law?

No, that would be just as stupid as suggesting masks are equivalent to bullet proof vests, I guess.

We all accept that masks do not entirely prevent transmission. Also that doctors are not the experts in mask testing. That’s a given.

What we do know is that they make a slight difference. We also know that doctors get their advice from experts

(not auntie Doris on Facebook who in turn read it from some other weirdo)

We can agree that doctors surgeries & hospitals tend to be full of ill people…

It is no effort at all to wear a mask in such a place, if requested.

Why would that be up for debate, weird.

Hardly anyone wears them out & about, can’t remember last time I did. A distant bad memory.

But in medical environments it is no effort to play by their rules.

Why are people still arguing about this?

If you believe masks reduce transmission wear an FFP3 with a filter. This will protect you and is more comfortable to wear than a non filtered version but offers no protection to others.

If you don’t believe in masks then just take your chances

In that case, why weren’t masks required prior to covid in such settings?

They have a slight benefit now. Ok, great to know that those countries at the upper end of mask mandates in public spaces and enforced wearing performed so much better than those with no or more lax policies...

You’re absolutely right. 6.65 million deaths from Covid, 12,000 from Ebola according to WHO.

How many people died from either Ebola or Yersinia pestis last year?

How many died from COVID?

(COVID is milder but a lot more contagious)

Generally speaking i would expect the Policeman to know more about Law than I do, given that they have to sit exams on the subject.

The died within 28 days were used as an estimate - which turned out to be pretty accurate. The final figures come from death certificate primary cause. The excess death figures also line up - it's the same data they use every year for every other cause of death. But keep repeating the Twitter alternative facts. Life expectancy fell for the first time since the war.

Death certificate primary cause can and has been manipulated. My father in law died from Acute Myeloblastic Leukaemia last year. Had been in and out of hospital for 3 years following diagnosis with a life expectancy of 3-4 months. Cause of death on the death certificate? Covid. Just plain wrong!

Sorry about your FIL.

I too have had a similar experience.

When discussed on the covid thread I was called a "conspiracy theorist" and a "liar" by one poster........
