My first offence aged 17 was "jumping a red light".

I got pulled and the officer said, "You jumped a red light" I replied, "It was amber officer" to which he replied, "That's the same offence and the highway code says you should stop". I then argued that it would be dangerous to attempt to stop so quickly on a wet road.. and he then said you were therefore travelling to fast for the conditions... bang to rights!

Wallop. 3 points. Lessens learnt in 1981.
That logic undermines the purpose of having an amber light in the traffic light sequence.

You've got a real problem with traffic lights, haven't you? And with all the advice you've been given on PH, you still disregard them? Freeman of the land I suppose, traffic lights don't apply to you.

Oh! well researched sir!

Frankly I have more problem with all the "could ofs". Unless he is doing on purpose to wind us up?

Yep. A quick flash of lights is often a good way to dish out a drive-by bking. Very effective with motorway speeders!

I thought penalty points were only introduced in 1998 (Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988)

OP, I wouldn't recommend being an "amber-gambler" on the A1 Junction 7 lights if you go that far up - they are amber at the same time for the slip road and on the roundabout and some people fair rocket through, especially the slip road ones. I have seen a number of toe curling moments there. My driving instructor told me something I've never forgotten about lights - if they have been green for a long time there is a pretty good chance they will change as you get there, it has been good anticipatory advice ever since!

One of the issues I do have with the 3 secs of amber rule is it doesn't seem to change with speed limits - there is a section of dual carriageway near Corby, 60mph, and a couple of big junctions. 3 secs of amber is pretty short to make the go/no go decision for those ones and it's often busy too, so jumping on the anchors comes with other risks.

Excellent, they do not seem to teach grammar etc. these days, it constantly grinds.
Education these days does appear to be a case of the "Ofs" and the "Of-nots".

Pretty sure they've been around a lot longer than that - my Dad picked up points in the 80's when he overtook a police car on the motorway doing 90mph. Are you thinking of the change for new drivers which meant 6 points in the first 2 (?) years now requires a retest?

Good spot, either a troll or an attention seeker. Slightly illterate too from a grammar perspective. Best we all ignore this and future threads.

Being the son of a copper meant I was stopped a fair bit when I started driving, sometimes fair enough, sometimes because they knew who I was and i did something that was borderline.

I have been pulled over countless times, dodgy headlights (unaware at the time) cracked windscreen I was trying tog et away with, overtaking a 15mph tractor in a 30, handbraking round a 90 right lol!

But most times they are sound, and give you a ticking off.

Introduced in 1988. There were no penalty points in 1981, just endorsments.

I assume the'98 is a typo, they were introduced in '88 by, as you said, the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.

However, before the points system you could still get endorsements on your licence, and you only needed 3 endorsements to get banned, whereas now you need 4 (4x3pts).

If there were no points, could you get lots of endorsements without disqualification? Was it simply a case of paying fines, or did the number of endorsements have some sort of effect on your insurance?

Sorry, I meant "did the number have endorsements of some sort have affect..."
