Firstly, know this should be in "Speed, Plod & the Law" but just re-registered so not allowed to post there frown

End of January, driving along busy but narrow road, clipped a legally parked car wing mirror but didn't stop and subsequently didn't report to local police.

I received a PIN for driving without care and attention a few days later. I have 0 points at the moment, so though it will hurt, that's not the problem.

I signed up for current insurance policy at the end of April to take effect 2nd May 2021. On 1st May 2021, DVLA issued an email V778 allowing me to change my reg plate (for example from "OLD 123X" to "NEW 123X"). As much as I'm sure I notified my insurers by telephone 1st thing 2.5.21 (they are not 24hr), they say they have no record of call. So when accident happended the car bore the plate "NEW 123X", was registered as "NEW 123X" but "NEW 123X" was not insured, "OLD 123X" was. AA have now updated policy - admin charge but no change to premium.

It's the same vehicle with same vin number and chasis number.

  1. Am I going to get 'Driving Whilst Uninsured' added to my prosecution list?
  2. Should I mention NIP to insurers (renewal 2½ months) yet

At the start of Feb I recieved a 'Notice of Impending Prosecution' for a driving without due care and attention at the end of Jan.
I understand the courts have 6 months to serve me notice of court date(?)

Its been 3 months now and I'm hoping that my relatively minor offence is low enough on their priority list that they won't bother. Stupid wishful thinking, or do I have a chance?

Plenty of time yet. Not unknown for them to wait until the final week

As long as the only difference was a cherished plate rather than the insured vehicle, your insurer should provide a letter explaining the vehicle was insured at the time when prompted.

On behalf of everyone who has lost wing mirrors in the same situation to s like you, I seriously hope you get absolutely fked matey. Is prison an option?

Yes I'm grumpy.

No, because you weren't. The car was insured, there was just an error with the reg number.

I was just thinking this. What kind of tt clips a parked car and just carries on?

Minor offence or not, I do hope you’ve taken the time to re-assess your moral compass and attitude towards ‘I wonder if I can get away with it’ situations…

What do your insurance docs say about it? Read them and do what they say.

Also what about mentioning the accident you had to them? Planning on doing that when the time comes?

Has the owner of the car you damaged claimed on your insurance?

Presumably the victim had a dashcam, or was sat in his car, or some public spirited individual made a note of the reg. Hence the DWCA NIP.

Throughout covid I would sit in the car in a Tesco car park as the wife did the shopping.

I'd recommend everyone does this as I was amazed and appalled by the amount of deliberate/totally uncaring door opening into other cars being done, more often than not so a fat woman or man could then squeeze out.

There was also a depressing pattern of this happening to luxury cars that were parked. Brand new Jag parked up, loads of empty spaces around him but no, Vicky Pollard and family decide to park right next to him and smash their doors into his.

I did shout out then they need to be careful but they thought he had no right to park there.....

We need to lobby Tesco and all for US style bays, pretty much the equivalent of the 'family with kids' bays and space to open doors fully without issue.

Along with NIP one would assume he received a S172 and identified himself. If the incident is as the OP's description then he may have expected to receive a FP which he may have been offered and either missed or ignored it. The OP needs to say exactly what he has received and how/what he has responded to with a timeline. Maybe he can post redacted copies of the paperwork

Honestly if I were you I’d change your user name and re-register again.

Anytime you comment on anything slightly moral you’ll be reminded ‘Ah but remember that time you hit that car and drive off’

It’s the PH way.

Given nobody has bothered replying to this since Feb (why?), I’ll answer your two questions as well as I know.

1. No
2. Yes

Sorry to say, but serves you right and I’m glad you got caught. Why does it matter that the car was legally parked?

Just seemed weird that there wasn’t a single comment until the 1st May, despite it being posted 9 weeks earlier on 23rd Feb.
