Will probably see more issues with E10 perishing fuel lines on older cars and newer ones that have had replacement fittings that are not up to latest standards.

I've had a diesel Jag burst into flames, luckily it was in my mechanic's workshop at the time and his apprentice was st hot with a fire extinguisher.

Dodgy wiring on mine.

People cutting back on servicing to save money and ever increasing servicing intervals meaning potential problems are not caught early before it's too late.

Which service includes actually checking all the fuel lines?

Whilst people fret about fire risk on modern, fuel injected cars we mustn't forget the old days of carburettors mounted directly above distributors - which had obvious consequences as soon as there was any hint of a fuel leak.

Somewhat raised eyebrows at the earlier comment about fire service not yet in attendance despite car being alight for 6 or 7 minutes.

What the F do you expect? Plus on a motorway with limited access.

Our local station covering 3 towns is effectively manned by retained firefighters. 5 minutes and they've just arrived at station, never mind turned out and enroute. We are 11 mins from the station, probably 8 on blues. So that's pretty much a quarter of an hour best possible.

Last car fire I saw, Discovery 4 well alight, again about 15 mins, further but over much faster roads.

Even for a 24 hr manned station close by. Back in Derbyshire we had a portakabin go up. Arrived on scene 4 minutes after 999 call. Afterwards watching the fire develop on the site CCTV it felt like forever.

Big hold up last week coming past Newmarket area, A14, looked like there had been something on fire, big melted blob of road protected by a highways agency vehicle.

I passed this last year - hearse well on fire, funeral service crew, all dressed up, on the hard shoulder. I've sometime wondered if it resulted in an earlier than expected cremation and a discount for the next of kin!

We passed one on the autoroute south of Strasbourg a few years ago. Vehicle burning on the hard shoulder, emergency crew there (not fire brigade) traffic being waved past in the outside lane with one lane between us and the car coned off.

I didn't hang around and the heat through the car window (which was up) was scary, about a dozen or so vehicles after us one of the tyres let go.

The French have a different view on H&S to us.

I would say servicing had nothing to do with it, in fact probably more likely to catch fire after a service, due to fuel filter loose, oil on manifold ect.
