One off commute on a classic policy

I wonder if those who say this isn't commuting can tell us how the conversation with the insurance co would go if the OP's car was stolen from his office car park, after he'd driven to work, but before he'd left to drive to the garage?
So the policy excludes commuting, and the OP has to tell his insurer his car was stolen from work, having been driven their from his house. He has to tell them it wasn't commuting because had the car not been stolen, he would have driven it in a couple of hours to another destination?
I have a sneaky suspicion that claim ain't getting paid, and quite rightly.
